I was doing play by play, shot for shot through what was a good first period that saw Detroit leading 3-1. Within about 4 minutes of the second it was 4-4, then 5-4. Detroit has now let in 14 goals in 2 games and scored 9. Cossa’s play is disturbing at times especially as someone who spent time in the AHL and ECHL. The team looks fragile as soon as something goes sideways and there should be enough leadership on this roster to pull it together.

Regardless of my personal thoughts, CBJ has some potent offense and after the first just leveled up. My hope is that the main roster is looking at this and the pertinent leaders in that room are ready to talk to any of the players who have hopes of putting on the red sweater.

You can see some of my takes below, Twitter (X) isn’t working the same on the embed file so I’ve got to figure out a different way to embed the goals. As for the prospects, whether the wrong coach was picked (or the wrong players in too many cases) this tournament is embarrassing right now.

No Carter Mazur for Detroit’s first Saturday vs. CBJ.

First Period:

Kasper, Soderblom, Wallinder, Sawchuk and Tuomisto on opening lines. Cossa in net. Wings take a penalty for faceoff violation 24 seconds in. Hanas got a SH breakaway but Fantelli did well to stay on him defensively. Wings kill penalty, get an opportunity but still 0-0 3 mins in.

Sawchuk goal

At 6:02 Sawchuk got a partial breakaway and made good with a nice wrister near the faceoff dot after a steal of the puck. 1-0.

Doucet goal

At 9:35 Doucet took a shot from the half wall and it went it for a 2-0 lead. Lombardi may have tipped, waiting for update. Looks like DeSouza gets credit for the goal.

Lombardi goal

Lombardi crossed in front of the blue jackets goal and scored Detroits 3rd at around 12 min.

At 12:57 a penalty was called on Kasper and DeAngelis after some. “Interaction” by the CBJ net. 4 on 4.

Detroit goes short handed with 3:26 left. Just 23 seconds in Fantilli skates into the O zone and through 3 defenders scoring off the backhand. 3-1 DET

Cossa makes a big save with 1:39 left.

Period closes: 3-1 DET

2nd Period:

Wings go on power play at 34 seconds in. At 56 seconds into the power play it looks like Cross Hanas got the power play goal after a strong minute of cycling and keeping the play alive. 4-1 DET

At 2:50 CBJ got the goal back as Fantilli played a 2 minute shift and got an assist on CBJs 2nd tally. 4-2 DET

CBJ on the power play at 3:45. Just seconds in CBJ makes it a 1 goal game. 16:03 left to play.

14:25 in CBJ ties it up. More garbage

Just seconds later CBJ up 5-4

This will be the end of the play by play for today. What a disaster.
