Detroit losing 3-0 was an unwelcome sight. However, it was eclipsed by Tim Peel’s hot mic. I’ve avoided saying anything until now, just to watch the hockey Karen’s of the world act like they are appalled and see who was the biggest hypocrite. Does that sound jaded? It is.
Look, 2 weeks ago if I’d polled any of you on if you thought there was a such thing as a “make up call”, probably 90% plus would have said that you did. We’ve seen it. Tim Peel was just recorded admitting. And, he’s not the problem. We are just weeks outside of DOPS saying that they lied about Tom Wilson’s hit (called it boarding) in order to suspend him. You can find the sound byte pretty much everywhere. I don’t care about Wilson, but that is a WAY bigger story than this hot make. The Karen’s (looking at you LR) actually said that DOPS didn’t do enough. If Wilson had wanted to, he could have sued them into oblivion. He’s still got a few years if he wants to get a refund on that fine.
Beyond that, we have the unpenalized hit of Gudas on Glendening. That is a bigger story as well. But here we are while the pompous guild of hacks and whiners scream about the integrity of the game based on a make up call. The amount of garbage that George Paros and the higher ups let go in doing favors for friends and trying to control game flow is obscene. I’d actually read a former DOPS worker talk about calling one of the Tkachuk boys multiple times telling them they “could have” been suspended but he wanted to give them another chance. That’s what happens behind the scenes and it should make you sick. George calls Radko, “don’t worry no one really watched the game” and proceeded to delete tweets calling him out. Once the league’s biggest thug is now the favorite puppet.
Unfortunately, we have to put all of that aside if we want to try and enjoy this game. The refs will target players they don’t like, organizations they don’t like, or whoever the league tells them not to like. When coaches are working them over at the end of the period, it’s to try and get that makeup call. We watch it pretty much every single game. For a big enough penalty that was missed, why not use replay? You can make up for the delay by getting the refs to stop being overzealous to throw players out of the faceoff dot. Sounds like a fair swap.
For my 2 cents on the game, Detroit has been shut out for 2 straight, and no one other than Fabbri has scored in three straight. The team looked a bit lethargic until late in the third. That was worth watching. If they can come out to start this game the way they finished on Tuesday, it should be a better matchup.
So, what do you think? Yes, we caught Tim P. On a hot mic. Were any of you actually surprised that the make up call exists? The refs are likely to overcompensate for a few weeks so get ready for some miserable penalty runs. It could be a return to the “shanaban” era for a bit.
