According to Mlive Joe Veleno is also part of the negotiations. I love this idea. Those two could be line mates in the future and having them find their groove during the down time is a great idea. Veleno (like Zadina the year before) struggled in the AHL. It’s an eye opening experience to see how much tougher the competition gets. If those two could feed off of each other it would be a boost for this team going forward.

The previous post looked at Yzerman’s take in sending Green and Athanasiou to Edmonton. For two players who weren’t going to be extended, 2 second round picks and a fourth round pick isn’t a bad lot at all.

Back in June I looked at three categories of players who could start the season in Europe. One of the trickier candidates seems to be negotiation that start right now. Filip Zadina is looking to start the season playin on a team that has his father as an assistant coach. Yzerman is fully involved, which seems to speak to an NHL transfer agreement being in place.

Zach Leach released some of the details for this development earlier. Yzerman does a very hands on job of directing off season development. As a young player who hasn’t played since February, the opportunity presented itself as a chance to help in development. It sounds like a good move.

We’re seeing a small trickle pickup in overseas signings. Agent Todd Diamond had a client ready to return to the NHL in Nikita Tryamkin, but the uncertainty of the season has caused the Russian Defenseman to re sign in the KHL (rumored to have lost money on the deal as a bigger contract was offered a few months ago).

There seem to be a lot of players working out the plan B right now. Seider could be another young player hoping to get some ice time before camps open in November. For free agents already outside of the playoffs, everything is on the table at this point. Teams are up against a flat cap and they’re letting player agents know it.

There will be a flurry of activity between October and November this year. Once everyone is finished with the post season and the draft is upon us, many teams have to get creative. For young players to have some stability in playing overseas offers some much need “normalcy” in a season that is anything but.
