Last night the Canadiens announced that 23 players had been cut from their training camp and there weren’t any big surprises there really. 5 players who have an NHL contract have been loaned to the Laval Rocket: Lucas, Condotta, Gianni Fairbrother, Cam Hillis, Jan Mysak and Joel Teasdale. 4 players will be on a training camp tryout with Laval: Pierrick Dubé, John Parker-Jones, Miguel Tourigny and William Trudeau and 14 players will join the Rocket training camp: Peter Abbandonato, Anthony Beauregard, Gabriel Bourque, Santino Centorame, Tory Dello, Philippe Desrosiers, Ryan Francis, Olivier Galipeau, Alex Gree, Danick Martel, Émile Poirier, Brenna Saulnier, Brett Stapley and Joe Vrbetic.

Which means that Beck and Mesar, even though they could be sent to Junior are still with the Habs, that a decision hasn’t been made on Slafkovsky yet and that the blue line battle is still raging as the protagonists are all still at camp.

Bright and early this morning, the Canadiens also announced that they’ve agreed to a 2-year extension with starting goaltender Jake Allen. The netminder, who was making $2.875 M per year on his last contract will now earn $3.85 M yearly which is a raise of almost a million. Considering that his last contract was signed when he was expected to be Carey Price’s back-up, this makes perfect sense. With Cayden Primeau in need of seasoning in the AHL and Samuel Montembeaul having limitations, Allen is the de facto number one and that’s just fine.
On a team expecting to make the playoffs, Jake Allen is not the number 1 goaltender, but on a rebuilding team who’s all about development, he provides stability and a veteran presence.

If Cayden Primeau proves he’s ready for more whether it’s this season or the next one, Allen could fetch a good return at the trade deadline from a contending team looking for depth in net in readiness for a deep playoffs run.

Tonight, the Canadiens will take on the Sens in Ottawa and Jonathan Drouin will be making his preseason debut. Yesterday, Nick Suzuki, Josh Anderson and Madison Bowey took part in practice, but they are not expected to play this evening. We also got some clarity on Josh Anderson’s upper-body injury, turns out the power forward was bit by a spider which made his hand swell quite a bit and sidelined him. We’ll have to wait to see if he got any of Spider-Man’s powers from the incident though. Tonight’s game is scheduled for 7:00 PM and will be broadcasted on TSN 5 and RDS.
