Last regular season was somewhat of a nightmare for Carey Price, he was shaky in several stretches, and missed quite a bit of time because of injuries. In the end, he posted a GAA of 2.64 and a save percentage of just .901. Come playoffs time though, “Playoffs Carey” was back, and he certainly meant business, the Canadiens got to the Stanley Cup final on his back and his numbers were irreproachable. In 22 playoffs games, he had a GAA of 2.28 and a save percentage of .924.
When asked by journalists how he always manages to elevate his game in the playoffs, Price simply replied: “It’s fun in the playoffs”. So, does that mean that the regular season is boring, and Price perhaps subconsciously doesn’t give his all when the team’s life is not on the line? If it does, the Habs are doomed this season, they’ve lost some key players that have yet to be replaced and nothing short of “top of his game Price” will get them into the playoffs in such a tough Atlantic division.
As was just announced this morning, the NHL players will be in Beijing in February for the Olympics games and chances are that Price would also think that’s a fun tournament. Given his recent regular season performances, some may think Canada would be ill advised to use him as its number 1 goalie, but there is no denying that Price always shows up when both the pressure and the stakes are high. Looking online at projected rosters though, most outlet appear to believe that Price has got the inside track…for now anyhow.
Coach Dominique Ducharme said last week that he expected Carey Price to be fit and ready to not only start the season but join the team at training camp. That would mean his offseason knee operation went as well as possible and there were no setbacks in his rehab, finally a good bit of news for the Canadiens health wise. Enjoy your Friday Habs fans but be on the lookout tomorrow as it will be the deadline for the CH to either match the offer sheet the Hurricanes submitted to Jesperi Kotkaniem or accept the compensation provided for in the CBA (2 draft picks – a 1st and a 3rd). Should it be the second option, hopefully, Marc Bergevin will have another trick up his sleeve to fill his 2nd center position because starting the season with the current line-up would make it almost impossible to make the Spring dance, even on the back of “Prime Price”.
