The last time these two teams met was a week ago in Montreal and the Wild came away with a 3-1 win and a starting goaltender set straight. Marc-André Fleury had a very rough start to the season, but since getting the better of the Canadiens the Quebec netminder has won 3 games with a 1.95 GAA and a .927 SP.

The Canadiens only have an optional skate this morning which will make it hard to guess if St-Louis will stay the course with his lines. As we’ve seen, he’s not afraid of mixing things up, even after a win. He did however mention yesterday that he wanted to get an extended look at Kirby Dach on the top line, without of course excluding the possibility of Slafkovsky getting a turn with the 2 top dogs in the future.

As you all know by now, Evgeni Dadonov wasn’t at practice yesterday after being a healthy scratch on Saturday. While the Habs VP of communications Chantal Machabée let it be known that he was having a therapy day, many members of the media wondered if there was more to his absence given the fact that he was seen speaking to Kent Hughes after being left out of the line-up.
Whether or not there was more to this story, with 15 healthy forwards, Dadonov is in a precarious position. He’s not produced anything so far this season, Joel Armia is now healthy, Jonathan Drouin is keeping his head down and working on what he can control, Mike Hoffman seems to still have St-Louis’ favor for now and Juraj Slafkovsky keeps on improving.

When Joel Edmundson is healthy and ready to come back, something will have to give to make room for him on the roster. The easy answer could have been to send the 1st overall pick down to Laval so that he could get plenty of ice-time and opportunities, but as things stand, this would look like a cop out. Slafkovsky is improving from game to game and carrying 15 forwards with only the strict minimum number of defensemen is not ideal, especially if Edmundson comes back and needs rest on some nights.

The implication is that maybe, just maybe Kent Hughes will have to make a though decision and waive a veteran. With cap space being a rarity these days in the NHL, I’d be surprised if any of Hoffman, Dadonov or Drouin would be claimed off waivers, but the simple act of waiving one of them is a sort of admission that you’re stuck with him.

Tonight’s game starts at 8:00 PM and it will be interesting to see if the Canadiens fare better than they did a week ago against Fleury and co. One thing is for sure though, it would go a long way towards a better result if the power play could keep on scoring.

C’est la semaine dernière que les deux équipes se sont affrontées à Montréal et que le Wild a remporté la victoire par la marque de 3-1 et que son gardien partant a retrouvé son aplomb. En effet, après avoir connu un début de saison pour le moins décevant, Marc-André Fleury a une fiche de 3-0 avec une moyenne de but allouée de 1.95 et un pourcentage d’efficacité de .927 depuis qu’il a réglé le cas du CH.

La pratique du CH est optionnelle ce matin, ce sera donc difficile de savoir si St-Louis entend garder le cap avec ses nouveaux trios. Comme on l’a vu, il ne craint pas d’apporter des changements, même après une victoire. Cela étant dit, il a mentionné hier qu’il voulait voir Dach aux côtés de Suzuki et Caufield pour un peu plus longtemps, sans toutefois exclure la possibilité de leur adjoindre Slafkovsky dans le futur.

Comme vous le savez tous maintenant, Evgeni Dadonov n’était pas à la pratique d’hier après avoir été laisse de côté lors du match de samedi. Bien que la VP aux communications de l’organisation Chantal Machabée ait annoncé qu’il manquait à l’appel en raison d’une journée de traitements, plusieurs membres des médias croient qu’il y a anguille sous roche après l’avoir vu s’entretenir avec le DG Kent Hughes quand il a été rayé de l’alignement.

Que la journée de traitements soit le fond de l’histoire ou non, on doit admettre que Dadonov se retrouve présentement dans une position précaire. Il n’a rien produit cette saison, Joel Armia est maintenant en santé, Jonathan Drouin garde sa concentration et travaille sur ce qu’il peut contrôler, Mike Hoffman semble toujours être dans les plans de St-Louis et le jeune Slafkovsky continue de s’améliorer.

Quand Joel Edmundson sera en santé et prêt à revenir, quelqu’un devra lui céder sa place sur la formation. La solution facile pourrait être d’envoyer le 1er choix au total à Laval afin de lui permettre d’avoir beaucoup de temps de jeu et d’opportunités, mais de la façon dont vont les choses, se serait une dérobade. Slafkovsky s’améliore de match en match et garder 15 attaquants mais seulement le strict minimum de 6 défenseurs n’est pas idéal, surtout si Edmundson revient mais a encore besoin de repos de temps à autre.

Conséquemment, il est donc possible que Kent Hughes doive prendre une décision difficile en soumettant un attaquant au ballotage. Considérant que très peu d’équipe on de l’espace sous le plafond salarial, je serais surprise de voir Hoffman, Dadonov ou Drouin être réclamé, mais le simple fait d’un mettre un au ballotage est un aveu qu’il s’agit d’un poids dont l’équipe n’arrive pas à se débarrasser.

Le match de ce soir commencera à 8:00 PM et il sera intéressant de voir si le Tricolore s’en tirera mieux qu’il y a une semaine contre la bande à Fleury. Une chose est certaine, ça aiderait beaucoup si l’avantage numérique continuait de produire.
