UPDATE - 2:23PM - Zach Sanford traded to the Winnipeg Jets for a 5th round pick.
UDPATE 1:49 PM - Josh Brown and a 7th rd pick to Boston for Zach Senysheyn and a 5th rd. pick.
UPDATED - 9:57am - Anton Forsberg extended! 3 years at 2.75 AAV.
UPDATE - If and when Sanford or Tierney get moved today, look for Ottawa to get another NHL forward with exp that's a UFA to finish the season. Dzingel and Cogliano from SJ are 2 names to watch for with Ottawa.
UPDATE - LAK and NYR are the front runners for Chychrun. If he's moved today, immediately watch for Zaitsev to be on the move to AZ as they will need to take on salary to get to the floor!
Here is a quick update on rumblings I'm hearing from various sources. It will be interesting to see if Sens GM Pierre Dorion is able to move any of these players and not get fleeced again like he did yesterday! The one aspect that has fans even angrier with the Nick Paul trade is that Ottawa is retaining 44.5 percent of Nick Paul’s cap hit and remaining salary which equates to 600,750. So it wasn't bad enough that the Sens wouldn't sign him for 4 years/11 million as his camp was asking and that Ottawa wouldn't budge from the 4 years/10 million but then they turn around and payout over 600k to help Tampa Bay make the trade work. It's truly amazing that Dorion has a GM's job in the NHL! Dorion seems to be in the business of doing favours for every other GM in the league. Nobody will forget the favour he did for the Leafs a few years ago with the Zaitsev deal. Then he did the Canucks a favour yesterday by giving them salary cap relief with the Travis Hamonic trade when there will be plenty of defensemen to be had this summer during free agency.
I fully expect Ottawa to acquire a goaltender for the remainder of the season. Jaroslav Halak wouldn't waive his NMC in Vancouver to come to Ottawa. The Sens have kicked tires on Joey Daccord out in Seattle as well as Andrew Hammond in Montreal.
Teams that are calling on Sanford include NSH/MIN/WSH/NYR/CAR & EDM. I know a few teams are looking for blueline depth in a 7/8 role for the playoff push, so one can only hope they take Josh Brown for a 7th round pick. NY Rangers, Florida, and Tampa Bay are all kicking tires on fringe NHL defensemen in the hopes of an extended playoff run. I know Calgary has looked at Marc Staal and Nick Leddy, but if they can't grab either of them, maybe they turn to Ottawa for a guy like Brown or Michael Del Zotto. The Blues and Canes seem quite serious about possibly acquiring MDZ. Both Berube and Brindamour go way back with MDZ to their Philly days.
Dorion is looking to move Colin White and the two teams that have come up in discussions with various sources are the Sabres and the Blue Jackets.
I know the Preds had some interest in Chris Tierney back in January when they had scouts at every Sens game. His play has tailed off significantly so I wonder if the interest is still there. The Wild have a mild interest in Tierney too.
Last summer Dorion was looking hard at Max Domi as I wrote about in August, but the surgery thing had him back off. I'm told LA, Pitt, and Ottawa are in on Domi. Ottawa is hoping to upgrade the forward group at the deadline I'm told.
The Hamonic deal could be a precursor to another trade on defense I'm told. I have it from 2 sources in both the Sens and Yotes organizations. Dorion is pushing hard for AZ to take on the contract of Zaitsev over the last 24 hours, but AZ wants the Sens 2nd rd pick this yr, Dorion has countered with the Sens 2023 2nd round pick. Time will tell over the next 16 hours or so if it gets done. But I think it's fair to say Sens fans would be ok with the Hamonic trade if Zaitsev gets moved. One year left with Hamonic but 2 more years left with Zaitsev's deal has a price!
I was told late last night that the Habs are trying to move Jeff Petry to Arizona as well. So there's a chance Ottawa might have to outbid the Habs to get the Zaitsev contract off the books. Petry has an extra left on his deal compared to that of Zaitsev.
Please check back throughout the day as I will update the blog all day long!
