With the Ottawa Senators signing forward Derick Brassard to a one year contract this morning, the next move Sens GM Pierre Dorion will have to make is to either waive Dylan Gambrell or send down Mark Kastelic as he's waiver exempt. DJ Smith has said all pre-season that the best players will play come opening night. If that's truly the case, Kastelic should be in the lineup in Buffalo on Thursday as he outplayed Gambrell by a country mile.
I really like that Dorion is learning from his mistakes last season in which the team didn't have enough depth or experience at the forward position when injuries occurred. The Brassard is a step in the right direction.
The other roster move that could take place in the next 24 hours is that of Nikita Zaitsev. Many in the Sens organization feel Zaistev needs to be either traded to another team, placed on waivers with the hopes another team picks him up or if he clears waivers then he will be sent down to Belleville in the AHL.
The Arizona Coyotes claimed defenseman Juuso Valimaki off waivers from the Calgary Flames yesterday, leading to more speculation that the Coyotes are trying to gain some depth on the blueline for when they trade defenseman Jakob Chychrun in the near future.
On another note, the Sens' also confirmed Ridly Greig has now served his one-game suspension for the high hit on Pierre Luc-Dubois during last year’s pre-season. The league allowed him serve it during the pre-season, which is surprising, but I wonder if it was because the suspension came during a pre-season game? Now Greig will be available to be called up to Ottawa anytime.
Thoughts comments Sens fans on what Dorion should do with the last forward spot or the status of Zaitsev?!
Thanks for reading.
