First off, for the latest Sens updates, please follow me on Twitter at
Give me a Twitter follow, I will give you a follow too!
UPDATE - Teams that are calling on Sanford include WSH/NYR/CAR & EDM.
UPDATE - Calgary looking to add blueline depth. The names they are kicking tires on are Staal, Leddy, and MDZ! Sens will have to retain part of MDZ's salary to move him. STL needs blueline help and Berube goes way back with MDZ from their Philly days. Canes and Flames are seriously looking at MDZ too.
UPDATE - Last summer Dorion was looking hard at Max Domi as I wrote about in August, but the surgery thing had him back off. I'm told LA, Pitt, and Ottawa are in on Domi. Ottawa is hoping to upgrade the forward group at the deadline I'm told. More info coming on the Sens blueline!
UPDATE - The Hamonic deal could be a precursor to another trade on defense I'm told. I have it from 2 sources in both the Sens and Yotes organizations. Dorion is pushing hard for AZ to take on the contract of Zaitsev over the last 24 hours, but AZ wants the Sens 2nd rd pick this yr, Dorion has countered with the Sens 2023 2nd round pick. Time will tell over the next 16 hours or so if it gets done. But I think it's fair to say Sens fans would be ok with the Hamonic trade if Zaitsev gets moved. One year left with Hamonic but 2 more years left with Zaitsev's deal has a price!
In two perplexing trades today, Ottawa Senators GM Pierre Dorion has managed to anger the Sens fan base without even speaking at one of his pressers. As mentioned in my blog two days ago, the Lightning has had scouts at many of the Sens games over the past few weeks but I was told it was due to their interest in Zach Sanford. Instead, they pulled off another great move by acquiring Nick Paul for Mathieu Joseph and a 4th round draft pick. Joseph will be an RFA at the end of the season.
The one move that Sens fans up in arms even more though is a move made earlier this afternoon when Ottawa acquired Travis Hamonic from Vancouver. How on earth do you justify paying Hamonic 3 million dollars next season, especially when you trade Paul to Tampa Bay over a small difference in money? The fact that Ottawa even had to give up a 3rd round draft pick in return for Hamonic has everyone in NHL circles shaking their head.
Many Sens fans had hoped Dorion would use his surplus of draft picks and prospects to get a top 6 forward. When management said they wanted a top 4 defenseman, I didn't think Hamonic would fit the bill for that spot on the roster.
One has to hope there are many other moves to come over the next 18 hours or so to justify these two trades today.
Do these 2 trades make you believe that Dorion should be fired before he does any more damage to this roster? How much do you think Pierre Maguire was involved in either of these trades? Comments?!
