Last night, for the 2nd consecutive game, Connor Hellebuyck got a shutout for the Winnipeg Jets as they defeated the Colorado Avalanche by the score of 1-0 at the Canada Life Centre.

First Period:

The Jets got on the scoreboard quickly as Mark Scheifele and Gabe Vilardi broke in on a 2 on 1 that finished with Vilardi putting the puck past Alexandar Georgiev to give the home side a 1-0 lead just a minute into the game. Shortly after that, Kyle Connor got a partial breakaway but was stopped by Georgiev. The Jets carried the play for the majority of the period but could not get that second goal and the period finished with the Jets leading 1-0.

Second Period:

There was no scoring in the second period. But the Avalanche slowly began to take control of the game as the period went on. The shots after 2 periods were 24-18 in favor of the Jets.

Third Period:

The ice was clearly tilted in the Avs favor for the entire 3rd period. They outshot the Jets 17-4 in the frame. With the extra attacker and their only PP of the night to finish the game, the Avs had an extended 6 on 4 to finish the game but could not get the equalizer past Hellebuyck who stole this game for the Jets. Final score was 1-0.

Some takeaways from the game:

This was the Jets first match up against the Avalanche since they got embarrassed by them in a 5 game series defeat last spring. Although they did get the 2 points in an early November game, that 3rd period was pretty reflective of that 5 game series last spring.

This was Hellebuyck's first back to back game shutout in his career. It was his 3rd shutout of the season and 40th for his career.

Scott Arniel did try shuffling his lines in the third period but other than one Nikolaj Ehlers chance, they never really got any sustained pressure in the final frame.

The Jets record is now 13-1 to start the season. Their tough schedule continues Saturday afternoon when they host the Dallas Stars.
