The Winnipeg Jets continued their season long homestand on Tuesday night at the Canada Life Centre and absolutely crushed the Vancouver Canucks by a score of 6-1. Connor Hellebuyck picked up his league leading 27th win of the year on a cold winter night in Winnipeg.
1st Period:
The Jets opened the scoring at the 7-minute mark of the game when Kevin Lankinen turned the puck over to Gabe Vilardi, who then immediately got the puck over to Kyle Connor to put it into the open net to give the home side a 1-0 lead. Connor struck again 6 minutes later when he corralled a rebound and tucked it past Lankinen to give the Jets a 2-0 lead. On the very next shift, hats would litter the ice as Vilardi would spring Connor on a break-away, who then made a beautiful deke around the Canucks goaltender to complete his natural hat trick. The Jets would take the commanding 3-0 lead into the 1st intermission. Every Canucks skater finished the 1st period with a minus 1 rating.
2nd Period:
Just under a minute into the middle frame, Neal Pionk’s blast from the point gave the Jets a 4-0 lead. Then, with just under 5 minutes left in the period, Nino Niederrieiter banked a shot off the back of Lankinen and into the Canucks net to give the Jets a 5-0 lead heading into the 2nd intermission.
3rd Period:
The Jets PP produced a goal 90 seconds into the final period when Mark Scheifele fired a shot from the slot past Lankinen to give the Jets a 6-0 lead. Half-way through the final period, it looked like Connor Hellebuyck was well on his way to another shutout but it wasn’t meant to be this time. Logan Stanley turned the puck over to Nils Hoglander, who went in alone and got the puck past Hellebuyck to break the shutout bid. Stanley was booed by the home crowd when he next had possession of the puck. The final score would be a dominant 6-1 victory for the Jets.
Some takeaways from the game:
Connor and Scheifele are now tied for the team lead in goals with 26 apiece. Both players are amongst the league leaders in goals and continue to flirt with that 50-goal pace for the season.
Although the game wasn’t a sellout, there were over 14000 people in attendance which is above 90% capacity. The Jets attendance overall has been better than it was last year. Hopefully this trend will continue to tick upwards as the inflation comes down along with the mortgage rates.
The Jets continue their season long homestand Thursday night when they host the Seattle Kraken.
