What Is And What Should Never Be

Some of you might recognize the title of this blog. It’s one of the many great songs by Led Zeppelin.

As I watched Game Six between NYI and TBL last night, this song popped into my mind for some reason.

How ironic it was seeing the Panthers instate rival (TBL) battle it out with the Cats’ more recent foe (NYI). One team looking to advance to the cup finals, the other trying force a game seven, all while Florida players watched from their couches.

To be fair, most of the league was doing the same thing that Florida players were, but this is where the song title came into play for me...

“What Is” - the reality that the Panthers came up short again and watched an Islanders team (who was in the in same position as them), run with the opportunity and almost get to the finals.

“And What Should Never Be” - the Panthers success as long as they continue to settle for complacency.

I know...the Zeppelin song title is a bit of a stretch to structure a blog around, and the bit about their success (or lack of) is vintage Panthers negativity, but its the truth. Watching these playoffs shows just how far the Cats have to go.

Playoff hockey is synonymous with gritty, tough, high-tempo play - things the Panthers just don’t have. Like every year, we saw guys/teams in the playoffs find that next gear and do whatever it takes to win - there’s no sleepwalking this time of year (speaking of this, I’m planning on doing a little player breakdown for the next blog, so sit tight).

Of course...we all know change comes from the top, and it looks like Zito is already starting to shape things to his liking.

Per the Panthers site:

“The Panthers have named Rick Dudley and Paul Fenton Senior Advisors to the General Manager, Gregory Campbell Vice President of Player Personnel & Development, Blake Geoffrion Assistant to the General Manager and have named P.J. Fenton to the club's scouting staff.

The club also announced that Mike Kitchen will not return as an assistant coach. American Hockey League assistant coach Doug Janik will not be joining the team affiliation in Charlotte.

Dudley has over 45 years of experience in professional hockey and over 20 years of experience as an NHL executive. He rejoins the Panthers front office after most recently serving as the Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations for the Carolina Hurricanes for the past two seasons. The native of Toronto, Ontario served two seasons as the Panthers General Manager (2002-03 to 2003-04).

He has held senior executive roles with the Carolina Hurricanes (2018-19 to 2019-20), Montreal Canadiens (2012-13 to 2017-18), Toronto Maple Leafs (2011-12), Atlanta Thrashers (2009-10 to 2010-11), Chicago Blackhawks (2004-05 to 2008-09), Florida Panthers (2002-03 to 2003-04), Tampa Bay Lightning (1999-00 to 2002-03) and Ottawa Senators (1998-99).

He has held the position of General Manager for Atlanta, Florida, Tampa Bay and Ottawa, has served as Head Coach of the Buffalo Sabres (1989-90 to 1991-92) and has held GM and head coaching positions in the IHL, AHL and ACHL.

Paul Fenton spent 20 years with the Nashville Predators organization, joining the franchise upon its inception as the Director of Player Personnel. Serving seven seasons in that role, Fenton was promoted to Assistant General Manager in 2006-07, a position he held until 2017-18. He also served as General Manager of Nashville's AHL affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals, for five seasons (2013-14 to 2017-18). During Fenton's time with Nashville he played a key role in the team's amateur scouting, player personnel and player development culminating in the team reaching the 2017 Stanley Cup Final.

The native of Springfield, Mass., most recently served as a scout for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Fenton has served as General Manager of the Minnesota Wild (2018-19) as well as General Manager of Team USA at the 2011 IIHF World Championship. He also served as Director of Player Personnel for Team North America at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. He spent five seasons with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim starting as a professional scout in 1993-94 before serving as the club's Director of Pro Scouting for two seasons (1996-97 to 1997-98).

Campbell returns to the Panthers after spending the last four seasons as a Player Development Coach in the Columbus Blue Jackets organization.

A veteran of 803 NHL regular season games, Campbell was originally selected by Florida in the third round (67th overall) of the 2002 NHL Draft. He spent six seasons with the Panthers (2003-04 to 2009-10), registering 85 points (29-56-85) over 363 regular season games.

As a player, Campbell has won championships on the professional, major junior and international stages winning a Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins in 2011, Memorial Cup and Ontario Hockey League Championship with the Kitchener Rangers in 2003, and he captured the Spengler Cup with Team Canada in 2017.

Geoffrion joins the Panthers after spending the previous seven seasons with the Columbus Blue Jackets organization, serving four seasons as a professional scout (2013-14 to 2015-16, 2019-20) and three seasons as Assistant General Manager for the club's AHL affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters (2016-17 to 2018-19).

Born in Plantation, Fla., and raised in Nashville, Tenn., Geoffrion was selected by Nashville in the second round (56th overall) of the 2006 NHL Draft. The University of Wisconsin alum and Hobey Baker Award winner appeared in 55 career NHL games for Nashville (2010-11 to 2011-12) and Montreal (2011-12), producing 13 points (8-5-13), before his career was cut short due to injury.

He helped Team USA earn a Bronze Medal at the 2007 IIHF World Junior Championship and a Gold Medal at the 2006 IIHF U18 World Junior Championship.

P.J. Fenton joins the Panthers after two seasons with the Minnesota Wild (2018-19 to 2019-20), where he served as an amateur scout and the club's Co-Director of Amateur Scouting.

Prior to his time with the Wild, Fenton served two seasons as an amateur scout for the Edmonton Oilers (2016-17 to 2017-18).

Originally selected by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round (162nd overall) of the 2005 NHL Draft, the native of Springfield, Mass., played nine total seasons of professional hockey in North America and Europe, winning a championship with the Bietigheim Steelers in Germany's Second Division Eishockey Bundesliga in 2013.“

So it appears the wheels are in motion in South Florida. Can’t wait to see what movement is to come with this roster!

My Draft Day: Shawn Thornton

Start your weekend off right by heading over to the Cats site to read a nice little interview with Shawn Thornton as he reflects on his draft experience and more.
