The Vancouver Canucks have added to their forward group, signing Pius Suter to a two-year, $3.2 million contract ($1.6 million AAV).
Suter, 27, was one of the top free-agent forwards still left on the market, and it seemed inevitable that he would find a new home. Luckily for the Canucks, they are the team that has landed him, and at an affordable price to boot.
Suter spent the 2022-23 season as a member of the Detroit Red Wings. In 79 games with the Original Six club, he scored 14 goals and added 10 assists. When noting that he just posted a 36-point campaign in 82 games the season before, it is fair to say that it was a down year for him offensively. However, he also became more reliable defensively and worked well on Detroit's penalty kill because of it. This is an element that he should bring to the Canucks' roster, too.
Although Suter can play all three forward positions, he is likely to fight for the third-line center spot with fellow free-agent signing Teddy Blueger at training camp. Adding a little competition is certainly never a bad thing.
Overall, this looks like a nice low-risk move for the Canucks. Suter will improve their bottom six and give them another solid two-way forward in the process. Let's see how much of an impact he can make the club in 2023-24 from here.
