For those into video games, it is a big deal of which athlete graces the cover for a particular year and someone put on their twice is a rarity. For the second time in three years, Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews will be on the cover of EA Sports NHL game. The NHL ‘22 game will be released to coincide with the start of the 2021-22 regular season on October 15.

Matthews, 23, won the Rocket Richard Trophy with 41 goals in 52 games last season, but is a bit of a surprising choice over a number of players from the Stanley Cup winning Tampa Bay Lightning, Art Ross Trophy winner Connor McDavid or Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon.

Matthews touched on the Leafs disappointing end and early exit in the playoffs with ESPN’s Greg Wyshnyski, indicating that the loss to Montreal and questions about the direction and structure of the club have been frustrating.

“People have opinions and they can say what they want, and rightfully so, but I really believe in the team and I really believe in all of the players on the team -- the core group especially. I truly believe that we're going to get it done.” Matthews said. “We're going to be better from our losses, and from the adversity that we faced. The only way is forward. [The playoff loss] sucked. There's no other way to put it. Extremely disappointing. But it'll just feel that much better when we eventually get to the top.”
