The Toronto Maple Leafs organization has drafted and developed a number of youngsters currently playing in the NHL (Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander), but the club under former GM Kyle Dubas replenished their prospect pool to provide the Leafs with young prospects. It will now be up to new GM Brad Treliving to continue that work.
As we did last year, we will rank the club’s top prospects over the upcoming weeks based on their progress in either the NCAA, CHL, Europe, ECHL, or AHL and their potential to make the Leafs roster and make a contribution in the future.
Players are eligible for the list if they have not played more than 40 NHL games and are 25 years old or younger:

The Maple Leafs have a number of prospects that are more long-range developmental projects either playing in European leagues or in the NCAA. One such prospect is defenseman Michael Koster, who was selected in the fifth round of the 2019 Draft in Vancouver.
Koster came out of Chaska (Minn) H.S. as a scoring star and played for the USHL’s Tri-City Storm leading into his draft year. The 5’10”, 181 lb blueliner moved on to the University of Minnesota, where he has made a slow progression over three seasons.
After rather pedestrian totals of 12 and 14 points as a freshman and sophomore, Koster’s offensive production spiked to 29 points (6 goals, 23 assists) in 40 games, playing with a Golden Gophers squad that featured highly regarded NHL prospects Logan Cooley, Brock Faber, St. Louis first rounder Jimmy Snuggerud, and Leafs winger Matthew Knies.
Koster’s strong points are his skating, anticipation and positioning, which makes up for his lack of size. Once thought as a long shot to make it to the NHL or even to get an entry-level contract, the 22-year-old is entering his senior season as the co-captain of the Golden Gophers and with another good year a likely candidate to get signed by the Leafs after the NCAA season.
