Trio named to Canada's WJC team

Congrats to defensemen Justin Barron and Bowen Byram, and forward Alex Newhook, Avalanche prospects who on Friday were named by Hockey Canada to Team Canada’s 25-man roster for the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championships.

The tournament runs from Christmas Day through Jan. 5, 2021 at Rogers Place in Edmonton.
Canada is defending champion of the under-20 event.

The Avalanche selected Byram, 19, with the No. 4 pick in the 2019 NHL draft. He had two assists in seven games for Canada in last year’s tournament.

The 6-foot-1, 192-pound Byram had 52 points (14 goals, 38 assists) in 50 games last season for the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League.

Byram, who is from Cranbrook, British Columbia, had 71 points (26 goals, 45 assists) in 67 games in 2018-19 with 26 points (eight goals, 18 assists) in 22 postseason games.

Barron, 19, was the Avalanche’s first-round pick (No. 25) in the 2020 draft.

Barron, who is 6-2 and 198 pounds, is from Halifax, Nova Scotia and captain of the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Barron has seven points (one goal, six assists) in eight games this season. He had 19 points (four goals, 15 assists) in 34 games in 2019-20.

Newhook, 19, is from St. John’s, Newfoundland, and was a first-round pick (No. 16) in 2019.
The 5-11, 195-pound Newhook had 42 points (19 goals, 23 assists) in 34 games last season as a freshman at Boston College. He won the Tim Taylor Award as the top rookie in the NCAA and was named Hockey East Rookie of the Year.

Newhook was also named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team and Second All-Star Team.
