NEW VIDEO: The young defenseman kicked off his sophomore season in the AHL in an impressive way.

There’s no denying that Canadiens prospect Logan Mailloux had an exemplary rookie campaign in the AHL. The 21-year-old blueliner, the only Laval Rocket player to dress for all 72 games of the 2023-24 season, put up a whopping 14 goals and 33 assists (47 points) for the Quebec team last year.

He was also named as Laval’s AHL All-Star representative, and was named to the league’s All-Rookie team at the end of the regular season. Mailloux led all rookie defenseman in goals, points, penalty minutes (91), and shots (154) for the year, while coming in an impressive third amongst all AHL defensemen in points, fourth in goals, and seventh in shots.

The Belle River, Ontario native was primed for a big step forward this summer, and looked ready to compete in September’s rookie camp. Mailloux, when asked about his Montreal training camp performance, modestly indicated that there were plays and areas that he wanted to improve on, but overall, his confidence seemed rock solid.

But in a chapter of the Canadiens’ rebuild where talented defensive prospects run aplenty, Mailloux was ultimately cut on the final day of NHL training camp and assigned to the Laval Rocket. How did he respond? Only by putting up FOUR big points in Laval’s season-opening game…on the road!

And he was far from the only Habs prospect to make some big impressions on the ice last weekend. The youngest players, as a whole, stepped up and took the reins in many ways on opening weekend.

In the latest edition of Rocket Hockey Report, I recap both Laval Rocket games from last week, analyze Mailloux’s performance in greater detail, provide a prospect update, some thoughts on Alex Barre-Boulet returning to the AHL, and preview this week’s Laval game schedule.
