Recently, it was announced the Penguins, more specifically Fenway Sports Group, were going to be selling a minority share of the team. Now it appears they will be looking elsewhere for a President of Business Operations. Kevin Acklin, the Pittsburgh native, has recently resigned.
After seven incredible seasons with the Penguins, I have decided that I will be moving on from my role as President of Business Operations at the end of the season. I’m grateful to Fenway Sports Group for the opportunity to help lead this organization, to my colleagues for their dedication, and to our fans for their unwavering support. It has been an honor to serve the team I grew up cheering for, and I look forward to continuing to support the Penguins as an advisor through the end of the year. I will forever be proud to be a Penguin, and look forward to next steps in my career while continuing my service to Pittsburgh
I think having local Pittsburgh ties was/is a good thing for ownership of a local team. Having a conglomeration that operates without transparency lends itself to a fan base being uneasy or unsure of the path of the future. This is amplified when the team is going through a rebuild/retool or whatever you want to call the current Penguins. The Mario Lemieux Penguins this isn’t.
Other Penguins related news includes their former defenseman signing a long term deal with his new team. Marcus Pettersson and the Canucks wasted no time inking a six-year deal worth an AAV of 5.5M. Pettersson will be 29 years old this May and the Penguins were clearly unwilling to give him the term he desired to stay in Pittsburgh. His loss will be felt in the short term. He was one of the best complementary defenseman the Penguins have had in the Crosby and Malkin era. Whatever partner he is with in Vancouver will be better for having him on the ice. Kyle Dubas did a great job extracting value from him as a pending UFA and both the team and the player seemingly got what they wanted out of the trade.
