I've seen that fish before

As Mike Lange would say, I’ve seen that fish before. The fish, unfortunately, was a Penguins goaltender giving up the first goal of the game on the opposing team’s very first shot. We are now up to 11 times this has happened in the 2024-25 season.

Opponents have scored on one of their first 5 shots of the game in 21 of Pens’ last 38 games.

And now 22 out of 39 games. It all led to a 6-1 drubbing to the Philadelphia Flyers. Alex Nedeljkovic finished with an .842 save percentage which was a follow up to the .615 performance he had against Washington. It isn’t lost on him that his play is not up to the proper standard at the moment.

While Nedeljkovic might string together some competent looking stretches he has run into trouble more times than not this season when compared to other starters in the league

Kyle Dubas has had a real blind spot for goaltending talent during his time as an executive. This is an area where the Penguins will definitely need to address this offseason as Joel Blomqvist and Sergei Murashov are both likely not ready to handle a regular NHL workload. For now, it is totally fine because losing is winning for the Penguins.

Since coming back from the Four Nations break the Penguins have been outscored 19-7 with five goals against being the best defensive performance in the bunch. If we are going to slog through this final stretch let’s get some Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin 5v5 time to appease the fans who are actually sticking through with this product.

Penguins and Flyers will be back at it tomorrow, this time in Pittsburgh.
