Absolutely devastating news today for Oil Country as Mike Stelter, father of Ben announced today on Twitter that their six year old had succumbed to brain cancer.

For those not privileged to know who Ben was. The six year old first made his appearance on the ice on March 24th unbelievably excited to be standing next to his idols, McDavid and Draisaitl. The young man quickly endeared himself to the fanbase.

From then until the end of the season and into the playoffs, Ben was always there. He was there for every regular season game until the end of the year and any time the camera went to him there was a bigger cheer than for any of the on ice play.

As the playoffs began, Ben continued to be an icon for the city. Ben received his own Upper Deck hockey card and no playoff win was official until Ben himself uttered the words, "Play La Bamba Baby."

Ben was a more than just a spark for the Oilers and the city of Edmonton. He was a bright light and while he may be gone far too soon, we will not easily forget his laugh, his excitement and joy, and smiling face, even when faced with such a horrible illness. I am sure we will see the organization do something next season to immortalize Ben.

Once an Oiler, Always an Oiler

Rest in Peace Ben.
