Free Agency Kicks Off - Will The Kraken Be Big Buyers?

Today marks the beginning of Free Agency and Seattle will have some interesting decisions to make.

For starters, the team did offer an extension to Joey Daccord for two years at 1.2 million AAV. Great signing for a young netminder.

Now the less great news.

The Kraken did not qualify Morgan Geekie or Daniel Sprong. Sprong had one of the best goals per 60 in the NHL playing essentially a fourth line role but still scored 21 goals in 66 games. The Kraken were rightfully fearful about his arbitration case. The team may still try and sign the player but you can bet other teams around the NHL will be looking at the goalcentric forward.

Morgan Geekie is one that saddens me a bit because I liked the direction the young player was starting to head in. In his first full season the 24 year old right shot centre put up 22 points in 73 games. He looked like he was finally figuring out how to use his speed to produce in the NHL.

Maybe both players still end up with the team on a smaller number. We shall see.

For the rest of Free Agency I am intrigued to see what the team does. We know the Kraken want a right shot defender capable of moving the puck out of the defensive end. Will Seattle go big game hunting in Free Agency or will they continue to find smart low cost options?

I will update as we find out.
