On June 30th, 2023 the Kraken re-signed Joey Daccord to a two year 2.4 million dollar deal (1.2AAV).

That's certainly paying dividends now.

It's been a wild ride for the Seattle and Joey Daccord. Daccord was the selection the Kraken made from the Ottawa Senators. At the time there were bigger profile names like Chris Tierney, Rudolfs Balcers and Matt Murray who were more likely candidates to take. Not only did the Kraken not take a run at Murray, they went for a lower profile goalie.

Flash forward to 2022 training camp where the Kraken had to risk losing Daccord on waivers when they decided to roll with Martin Jones and Grubauer.

Now here we are and Daccord is not only showing he is a starting goalie, he deserves some Vezina recognition.

Right now the clear favorite for the Vezina is Connor Hellebuyck. The Jets sit not only the top of the Central, or the West, but atop the entire NHL and Hellebuyck is a huge reason why. He has a 0.941SV% at 5 on 5, the most of any goalie who has played at least 900 minutes. At all strengths, Hellebuyck is 4th with a 0.921SV%.

The reason Hellebuyck dips down to 4th is he hasn't been great on the PK. Of the 29 goalies who have played 100 minutes or more on the PK, Hellebuyck sits 21st with a 0.853SV%. The PK is a team effort but at the end of the day, Hellebuyck has to be the best PKer on the team and it's been one weakness.

Now let's look at Daccord. Daccord sits 2nd in the NHL with 0.940SV% at 5 on 5 in 24 games. In all situations, Daccord remains 2nd in the NHL with a 0.922SV%. Daccord sits at 17th in the NHL with a 0.875SV%.

The biggest factor in the voting may come down to whether or not the Kraken make the post-season. Right now the Kraken are tied with the Oilers and the Blues for the final Wild Card spot but Seattle has played 3 more games than the Oilers and 1 more game than the Blues. The 8-0-2 record and 6 game winning streak has kept the Kraken in the conversation but it will be a grind in the second half of the season.

Regardless of whether Daccord wins the Vezina or even just manages to get some votes. The Kraken have an excellent goalie that at 27 years old should be in the prime of his career and have him on a steal of a deal for this season and the next.
