Earlier on Monday it was announced that Jaden Schwartz, Adam Larsson, Jordan Eberle, and Yanni Gourde were named the alternate captains for the Kraken. This give the Kraken a solid leadership core of veterans who have been in the league for years but are also impact players in their respective positions.
Shortly after that it was announced that Mark Giordano would be named the first captain in franchise history. Giordano, the 38 year old defenseman was the captain of the Calgary Flames for the past eight seasons before being selected by the Kraken in the Expansion Draft. Giordano has played the past 15 seasons in the NHL registering 143 goals and 509 points. His first game with Seattle will be his 950th NHL game.
Giordano is one of the oldest and most experienced players in the league and his leadership will be highly respected in this Kraken locker room, full of players who have never played together before.
This also likely changes potential trade deadline plans for the Kraken. It seems unlikely that Ron Francis will trade his captain at the deadline. Giordano is in the last year of his contract which pays him 6.75 million dollars.
The Kraken face off tomorrow against the Golden Knights for their first regular season game.
