Oscar Klefbom May Require Long Term Surgery |

Some troubling news today as Elliotte Friedman has reported that Oilers defenseman Oscar Klefbom may now look to have surgery to deal with injuries from last season. It looks that if surgery is the intended course of action, it would keep him out long-term.
Right now we have no clue when next season would start but when I hear "out long-term" I am thinking 4-6 months. If the season starts even January 1st, six months would have Klefbom gone until at least March. If that is the case, Edmonton absolutely needs to pursue another top 4 left shot defenceman and now it at least makes some more sense why Ekman-Larsson's name keeps coming up.
Some will wonder why Klefbom didn't have a surgery performed the moment the season ended. Surgery is not a magic wand that guarantees everything will be fixed and many times will leave the body weaker and more susceptible to injury. We have seen it time and time again.
Klefbom likely has spent the last couple months, rehabbing and getting multiple opinions from his doctors on how to proceed. The fact that it hasn't happened yet means options are still being weighed.
The Oilers have an average if unspectacular blue line group right now but with this news, combined with a worry about Adam Larsson's back issues suddenly some massive holes are appearing. Throwing Bouchard and Broberg into the mix isn't a well thought out plan and there are not many trade chips the Oilers can throw around.
This will be a situation we will continue to follow over the next two weeks.
