The Display Case #15: I'd Give The Jersey Off My Back For You... |
|
|
|
Welcome back for another edition of The Display Case folks! Today’s submission comes from Hockeybuzzard jmatchett383 in the “City of Brotherly Love” where his wife Lisa recently scored some “lightly used/recently worn” memorabilia from a hometown hockey hero….(let’s listen in, shall we?)
Every year, the Flyers end their fan appreciation day by giving the jerseys off their backs to fans. The fans are chosen at random throughout the game by seat number posted on the jumbotron. Prior to this past fan appreciation day, having had season tix for 8 years, I'd won a small box of popcorn and a hot dog.
After calling out maybe 90 different prizes, 1 of which was in my section, I said aloud, "You know, our section exists too!" to which my wife, whose name is Lisa said, "It doesn't matter if you win anything." Not 10 seconds later, her seat # came up on the jumbotron for a jersey.
After I was done screaming like a 3-year-old, she asked if I wanted to go down since I owned the tix. I told her she could go, because if I got a jersey in person from Mike Knuble or Max Talbot (both of whom she'd leave me for), I'd never forgive myself. So after the 2nd period, we went to where they were gathering for the on-ice presentation.
Each person gets an envelope and they open it on the ice when called, and only then do they know which player they have. So, players are getting called. Braydon Coburn. Wayne Simmonds. Max Talbot. Andreas Lilja...and I'm thinking, "Wow, maybe she could actually get Mike Knuble."
Well, she didn't get Mike Knuble. But here's what happened (courtesy of my friend):
Unlike most game-used jerseys, this one had a tag on the inside that read, "Philadelphia Flyers Fan Appreciation Day, March 30th, 2013" so there's no need to go through countless photos trying to identify when the jersey was worn.
Beauty grab Lisa! Hope you’ve got it framed and hung in a nice hockey shrine at home!
