Back from the ashes comes a re-launch of the “Display Case” series, offering a peak into the swag landed by Hockeybuzzards like you, and the unique stories that come along with them!
I love stuff like this, and originally set out to do a column like this, because these are the types of memorabilia and collectible scores that I feel make the hobby fun and interesting. More than just walking up to a counter and buying something, the people featured before and moving forward all have unique, intriguing and entertaining stories to go along with their treasures that the aforementioned straight-up purchase rarely has. That’s what it’s about for me, and I hope that as you peruse the previous “Display Case” articles and those to come you’ll see that although the piece at the centre of discussion may not always be that much of a standout, the story that accompanies it makes it a gem!!!
With that in mind, let’s take a look at the latest installment! This comes to us courtesy of reader Joe, a die-hard Eric Fehr fan, and his bartering for a signed stick…
So, I've followed Eric Fehr since the Washington Capitals drafted him back in 2003. I got a "Draft Day" signed jersey along with his name plate from the draft board which started my collection. I have several sweaters including a Brandon Wheat Kings sweater. I frequently search the Meigrey site for game used stuff. I was searching the site after 07-08 season and came across Fehr's first carreer playoff goal puck and had to buy it.
After receiving it I had it up with my collection of stuff. After having it for a while I thought to myself that Eric should really have it for his "trophy" room. I went down to Caps practice one day and told him that I had it and wanted to know if he was willing to trade something for it. He asked me what I want to trade for and I said a signed stick but it had to be a used one.
I went back a few days later with the puck. Eric was signing autographs and I yelled out his name and raised the puck up so he could see it. He told me to meet him on level seven of the parking garage. Another fan was there and asked me what Eric said and I told the guy "nothing'. I met Eric in the garage and we exchanged items and chatted for a few minutes. The stick hangs on my wall along with a couple of pictures and Caps sweaters.
