Ek on Flyers: Mailbag Monday: On When To Change a Coach….. |

I received a email the other day with a question in it that I thought it was kind of interesting…
“ If the flyers move away from John Tortella, would it be better to do so now or in the off-season?”
My answer:
I have no information on them changing courses with a coach right now, but theoretically, I am a big fan of moving away from a coach towards the end of the season, before the off-season. The reason is twofold.
#1. In the off-season there are tons of teams looking for coaches. Say for example, what should they do if the Flyers were interested in Denver University coach: David Carle. In my opinion, he’s going to be the hottest coach this off-season, but right now his team is still playing and while it’s legal to talk to him, I’m sure he wouldn’t want that distraction. That will end soon…in March. though…. If you’re interested in a coach like Carle, who will have many suitors, you might want to make a move now, bring an interim coach, and then talk to possible coaches.
2. Doing it now gives the team a chance to get to know the new coach. More importantly it gives the coach a see what he has in his team. Then he can go to the GM and say “I need more of this, etc.”
So the question is simple:
If you were to remove the coach, would you do so now or in the off-season?
