What Really is Better At This Point? Confidence or Tanking? |

My beet is you u’ve already pure in the comments “tanking” before reading this article…. And yes, I get it.
However, the reality is we’ve seen teams tank right to the end without any good coming of it, and those teams have not gotten anywhere fast. Even if only a third of the players on the Flyers right now will be a part of this team when it’s competing for a Cup, what’s good right now on the ice is of vital importance towards future success in Philly…..
Remember, this draft oder is a lottery. And we won’t know if it was better to finish in third worst or seventh worst until that lottery actually happens….. and yes, your odds are slightly better if you’re in bird, but many teams have jumped up to the top two spots over the years without having to psychologically torment their players in the last 5-10 games of the season.
And the reality of the whole thing is that there’s really nothing that Danny or Brad can do about this…. The players on this team are going to play as hard as they can for there jobs (here here or elsewhere) next year. They are also going to play relaxed when other teams they’re playing against are nervous because they’re fighting for a playoff spot….. so they’re gonna win some games here….
Anybody who doesn’t make the playoffs can get a top two pick. And after the top two picks in the NHL we have seen great players go at three and we seen great players go at 10….
So why build a culture of losing just for a few more percentage points?…. The worst record in the league does have a big advantage, but the flyers are not as bad as the worst team in the league right now… what has Connor Bedard brought to the Blackhawks yet? It takes more than draft picks in this league.
It’s not like the Flyers have a hot goalie that they could sit out right now…. None of these goalies are playing well in reality. I know Fedotov had a nice game last night, but I had friends texting me things like “why are they playing “ the last few games before last night?
So my advice is go with it…. Enjoy seeing what talent we have when that talent is NOT nervous about every shift they take. Enjoy watching Michkov in his race for the Calder.
Or…….you could be like Buffalo, Edmonton and Toronto were for years. Each had about a decade where they tried to lose every game to tank. And yes, eventually Edmonton and Toronto got good and became competitive but so did other teams who didn’t have to suck for a decade.
The Sabres, like the Oilers were a decade ago are pretty much embarrassed at this point to be getting a great pick….
None of the Cup Champs of memory did a complete tear down. None of them tanked…
Just my two cents….
