Training Camp: Day 8 (louis crevier)

Chicago Sun-Times, Daily Herald, NBC Sports Chicago, The Athletic Chicago

Day 8 of Blackhawks training camp featured the opener of a home-at-home series against the Blues. In addition to this preseason game, the most newsworthy camp notes were Alex DeBrincat being confirmed as a PKer for this season and Calvin de Haan played with a broken tibia last year.

In full transparency, like the first preseason game, I wasn't able to watch the entire game due to access issues and only caught the highlights from the Blackhawks website and social media. Game analysis is again primarily focused on goals scored and allowed.

Scoring Recap

1st Goal: Todd (0-1)

After the Hawks failed to clear the zone, the Blues worked the puck down to between the circles where Nathan Todd sent a laser above Marc-Andre Fleury's right shoulder in an unscreened and uncontested shot as Ian Mitchell and Nolan Allan stood to either side.

2nd Goal: Buchnevich (0-2) SH

After Seth Jones lost his stick as he and Luke Schenn both chased the puck to the left corner, all 4 other Chicago players fixated on Schenn which left Pavel Buchnevich all alone in the right circle to receive a pass and bury a one timer past Fleury for a shortie.

3rd Goal: DeBrincat (1-2) PP

Within the opening seconds of the power play, Patrick Kane worked the puck down to the right corner before centering it to Tyler Johnson in the slot who in turn made a touch pass over to DeBrincat to one time home via the team's patented backdoor play.

4th Goal: Thomas (1-3)

The Blues converted a missed pass to the middle of the ice in the Hawks offensive end to quickly break out the other direction. Seth Jones couldn't catch up with a streaking Robert Thomas who took a feed from Jake Neighbours and ripped it past Collin Delia.

5th Goal: C Jones (2-3)

The Hawks kept the play alive in the offensive end with a spin-o-rama keep-in by de Haan. After some pinballing between Chicago and St. Louis players, DeBrincat eventually nabbed the puck and spotted Caleb Jones making a heads-up play to rush down the left lane.

6th Goal: Barbashev (2-4) PP

Set up in behind the goal line, Zachary Bolduc tried to pass to a teammate at the top of the left circle but the puck hit Seth Jones' skate or he meant to make a bank play off of him. Either way, Ivan Barbashev pounced on it to cash in a garbage goal.

7th Goal: Tarasenko (2-5)

As the byproduct of a swift breakout led by Thomas of the Blues, Vladimir Tarasenko executed a perfect give-and-go with Neighbours to keep the Hawks defense on its heels before Tarasenko finished the sequence with a bullet from between the circles.

8th Goal: Carpenter (3-5)

Dylan Strome stripped the puck from Blues goalie Colten Ellis behind the net then Ryan Carpenter cycled the puck up to de Haan between the circles who reversed it back down to the slot. Carpenter had a wide open left side of the cage to deposit the puck into.

9th Goal: Neighbours (3-6) EN

Neighbours capped off a 3-point night with an empty netter.

Lessons of the Day

--

Colton Dach

Where Dach needs improvement are his skating and play without the puck. While willing to engage defensively, he gets beat by more agile opponents. Like older brother Kirby, Colton can also grapple with stickhandling around defenders by using finesse rather than power.
