Braun trade, market for Myers could help increase the return for Brodie

I can't help but think some of the early off-season developments in the defense market are good for the Calgary Flames' chances of maximizing the return on a T.J. Brodie trade, which almost feels inevitable.

The San Jose Sharks are in cap hell and everyone knows it. Even so, they still managed to fetch the 41st overall pick and a 2020 3rd for a 32-year-old defender who, last season, ranked 7th among eight Sharks defenders (35GP+) in 5v5 Corsi For%, posted horrible PK numbers, and recorded only 16 points.

Comparatively, Brodie finished 2nd among Flames blueliners in Corsi For%, was one of the team's best shot and chance suppressors on the PK, and recorded 34 points.

If one year of Justin Braun can get you a 2nd and a 3rd, the cost for Brodie has to be noticeably more.

What's shaping up to be a ridiculous free agent market should also help GM Brad Treliving drive up the price for Brodie. There aren't many name-brand defenders available, and the ones who are seem destined to be significantly overpaid.

I mean, the lack of quality available could lead to Tyler Myers(!) getting Mark Giordano money (excerpt via Pierre LeBrun's Notebook at The Athletic):

On Myers, I think the market will dictate he’s worth around $6.5-million to $7-million a season on a six- to seven-year deal. He’s coming off of a contract that paid him $5.5-million per season.

Myers doesn't drive play, he doesn't create much offense at 5v5, and he's not great at limiting shots or chances. There is no stand-out skillset.

In what world is he worth upwards of $7 million per? Certainly not this one.

If the 'big name' UFA defenders like Myers are going to be overpriced to that extent, I'd much rather give up a couple assets and get the better and (for now) cheaper player in Brodie.

Surely there are teams out there that feel the same way.
