Note: First part of this blog us purely for fun and is to not be taken seriously.
The big holiday is finally upon us and its time to celebrate and no I am not talking about Christmas, i’m talking about the one and only Festivus for the rest of us! For those of you who have zero idea about what I am talking about Festivus is a holiday from the show Seinfeld, which was created by Frank Costanza after he got into a fight at the store over a doll his son George wanted as a kid. There are three main features for the holiday; the aluminum pole, which is to remain decoration-free; the airing of grievances, and the feats of strength. More so than ever, I think Hawk fans should participate in this holiday just to get some of the built-up frustrations out.
The Airing of Grievances
As the late, great Jerry Stiller, aka Frank said, “I have a lot of problems with you people and now you’re going to hear about it.” Here are some of my grievances from the past year.
Stan Bowman, I have wanted you out of Chicago since after the first cup, you took more credit than you deserved for something that you did not fully build. I finally get my wish of you leaving the Hawks organization and I can’t even enjoy it do to the circumstance of why you are gone. To make things even worse, the way you handicapped this team with bad contracts, giving out NMC like candy on Halloween, and not sticking with your original plan of entering a rebuild after the 20/21 season have set this team back so far and it keeps you relevant when you should be an after thought.
The impatient fans, I hate to use this word, but its the only way to describe who I am talking about; these are the 2010 bandwagon fans. The ones who have only known good Blackhawks hockey. The ones I see on social media talk about how ridiculous it is for how bad this team is or asking where is the build in this rebuild. This isn’t NHL 23 where you can just simulate and go right, pass the bad time and jump back in to the good. The rebuild doesn't officially start until next summer at the 2023 draft. If you truly fell in love with this game and team then you are going to need to buckle up and accept its going to be a rough few years ahead.
A certain Canadian-based hockey media personality. I am not going to name names here Ill let you speculate. My main issue with this person is listening to his podcast and every episode he can not help but take shots at Chicago for the Kyle Beach situation and the pure joy he is getting for the Hawks failing because there are two ghosts from 2010 still apart of the organization. Then in the same episode goes on to praise and talk about how excited he is for Team Canada at World Juniors despite the issues that have come out about Hockey Canada. Their hypocrisy is just too funny.
The list could go on, but I will keep it to just three; however, I hope you all keep the holiday alive in the comments and air your grievances.
Feats of Strength
This is considered the final tradition of the holiday; the head of the household selects one person at the festival celebration and challenges them to a wrestling match. Tradition states that the holiday is not over until the challenger pins the head of the household.
I think if you look at this from the Hawks point of view, head of the household would be Rocky Wirtz as the owner of the team. I think you would have to hope Toews or Kane would be the one to get the chance to put Rocky in his place for how things have been handled over the years. Toews, for sure, has some build up frustration that has been a not so subtle secret from interviews going back to the Hagel trade.
In all seriousness before I get to the game preview, I wanted to just thank all of you for being so great and welcoming me into the HockeyBuzz family. Its been a dream for me to cover this team and thanks to all of you I have been getting a chance to do just that. Between this and my show its been an amazing year and the only way it could have been better was if we had a lot more positives to discuss. Things are about to get crazy once the roster freeze is up, so more interesting blogs are coming.
The Hawks dropped another game, losing this time to the Nashville Predators 4-2. This marks the 2nd 8 game losing streak this team has been on this season, both of which have come in the last 17 games. One special moment that happened in this one. Predators Captain Roman Josi scored the go-ahead goal which gave him 567 career points making him the all-time leader in Predators history. Very impressive considering Josi is a defenseman.
Next up, the Columbus Blue Jackets; this will be the Hawks best opportunity to snap this losing streak and prevent it from going to double digits. Lumbus comes into this one with a 10-20-2 record good for last place in the Metro and 30th in the league. They were one of those teams that people weren’t sure what they were going to be coming into this season after signing Johnny Gaudreau this past summer. They have been dealing with major injuries all year so they truly haven’t been able to show who they exactly are. One player to look out for is Adam Boqvist; he has been one of their many injuries, only appearing in 4 games so far this season, however, he was just activated from the IR, so if he finds himself in the line up I fully expect him to find the score sheet just like all former Hawks have done so far this year.
Players to Watch
Johnny Gaudreau 10 goals 24 assists 34 points
Patrik Laine 9 goals 7 assists 16 points
Kent Johnson 8 goals 8 assists 16 points
This will be my last blog until after the holiday weekend, I wanted to wish everyone a very happy and safe Christmas if you celebrate. Enjoy time with family and friends and stay warm out there if you are in the Chicago land area. I will see you all again next week!
