The New York Islanders’ get their first double digit goal scorer of the 2022-2023 season with an early third period goal, holding on to victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets by the final score of 3-2.
New York opened the scoring with a late first period goal from winger Oliver Whalstrom for his 6th goal
of the regular season. Matthew Barzal got his league tying 22nd assist with Nathan MacKinnon. 2019 first round pick Simon Holmstrom got the secondary assist, crediting him with his first career NHL point.
About midway through the second period, Ottawa native Jean-Gabriel Pageau got a power play goal for his 6th of the season. Defenseman Noah Dobson got the primary assist, being the only one in the position to get for the Islanders. Barzal got a secondary assist to surpass MacKinnon with 23 assists as the current leading assist producer in the NHL.
Columbus came back with two goals of their own, both coming from first round picks in the 2020 decade.
My Columbus player to watch, Russian winger Yegor Chinakov, returning in his first game back from an undisclosed injury, got his 4th goal of the season, being his second in his previous 2. Johnny Gaudreau and Kent Johnson got the assists.
Speaking of Johnson, he evened the scoring with his 5th of the season and career. The 2021 first round pick, selected 5th overall, was credited with his first career multi-point game. His power play goal was assisted by Marcus Bjork and Gaudreau.
My New York Islanders player to watch, Brock Nelson potted the game winning goal with his 10th of the season, and was unassisted.
Ilya Sorokin was in between the pipes for the Islanders, allowing two goal in 33 seconds. The other 59:27, he was the king of the Island. 24 saves for a 0.923 save percentage.
Joonas Korpisalo was the keeper for Columbus, having 21 save on 24 shots for a 0.875 save percentage.
