The Columbus Blue Jackets defeat the Winnipeg Jets in an upset 3-1 victory at Nationwide Arena. This is first home win in the month of February, and last home game until
next Thursday, the 23rd.
Kyle Connor had the opening goal for the Jets, their only one in the night. The Michigan alumni registered a power play tally with 1.8 seconds left in the first period off some open ice passing from the unit, and beat the Columbus netminder low for his 25th of the season. Former captain Blake Wheeler had the primary assist. My Jets' player to watch, Pierre-Luc Dubois had the secondary helper.
Three goals come next in a row to end the game.
Columbus evened the game exactly halfway through the second period with their club's first goal of the evening on the power play. With some inital shots near the end of the sequence, Patrik Laine found a home for the puck, on a second attempt from his office over the Jets' glove side for his 15th this campaign. Captain Boone Jenner and quarterback Adam Boqvist had the assists.
The game winning effort came midway through the third after an expiring Winnipeg penalty kill, with a Kent Johnson squeaker for his 12th of the year. Jack Roslovic and Emil Bemstrom had the helpers
The put away empty netter was a Laine breakout that Jenner pushed into the net by driving the center ice against the Jets' defenders for his team leading 16th goal of the year with just three seconds left in the game.
Pierre-Luc Dubois was my player to watch as he his mostly likely saw I g a Montreal Canadiens jersey come the fall. PLD was one of three former Blue Jackets on the ice - joining Sam Gagner and Kevin Stenlund. Dubois has the secondary assist on the Jets' lone goal, while being a -1, 2 minors, and 4 shots on goal with a 43.5% success in the faceoff dot at 20:46TOI. 293 points in 416 career games ain't bad.
David Rittich did not step up when the team needed him to, being 0-2 against Columbus this season with a 3.20 GAA and a 0.878 save percentage. He did stop 21 of 23 with a 0.913 last night.
Patrik Laine had his first multipoint game performance of the month against his former team, having him at 361 career points in 447 career games. Laine is a producer, and he came out to shine against the team that drafted him in 2016.
Joonas Korpisalo was a 2-0-0 with a 1.00 GAA and a 0.974 save percentage against the Jets.
