|
The Columbus Blue Jackets blow a four goal lead in overtime to the Pittsburgh Penguins to continue their playoff hopes deeper into the
season. The final score was 5-4.
A quick three goal first period sparked the Blue Jackets' offense followed by an early second period one to the be shut down the remainder of the evening.
Emil Bemstrom opened the scoring on the power play with his 5th of the campaign. Cole Sillinger and Kent Johnson had the helpers.
Lane Pederson scored his first as a member of the Blue Jackets and second of the season. Liam Foudy had the lone assist.
Patrik Laine became the first member of the roster this season to score 20 goals. Jack Roslovic and Kent Johnson had the assists on the final first period.
Just two minutes into the second period, Liam Foudy added his third career NHL goal from Bemstrom to conclude the visiting team scoring.
Pittsburgh came back with five goals in the last 32:45 of the game to complete the win.
Jason Zucker got his first of the night and 20th of the season from Evgeni Malkin and Alex Nylander to close out the second period scoring.
Only 21 seconds into the third period did Pittsburgh close the gap again. Jake Guentzel recorded his 25th of the season from Sidney Crosby and Rickard Rakell.
Zucker's second of the game and 21st of the year came from Geno.
Danton Heinen tied the game for the first time since the opening period with his sixth of the year. The assists came from Rakell and Crosby.
Crosby got the overtime winner off the powerplay from Malkin. The goal was his 28th of the season and 20th career overtime game winning goal, putting him second behind Alexander Ovechkin all time.
Mikael Granlund was my player to watch but was a late afternoon scratch due to injury.
Tristian Jarry allowed 4 goals on 12 shots for the home team; being replaced by Casey DeSmith minutes into the second period. DeSmith stopped all 15 shots faced.
Boone Jenner was my Columbus player to watch as he and Laine have been in a race all season to 20 goals. Jenner was held out of the scoresheet, but not the stat sheet. He had a minor penalty, but 2 hits and shots; a block, giveaway, and takeaway, while being destroyed in the faceoff dot and just under 20 minutes .
Elvis Merzlikins stopped all 7 shots faced before getting sick in the intermission.
In Michael Hutchinson’s first minutes as a Jackets’ goaltender, he allowed 5 goals on 40 shots for a 0.875 save percentage.
