The Columbus Blue Jackets conclude their home preseason games with a Metropolitan Division contest with the Washington Capitals. Puckdrop is at 7pm.
The Capitals are continuing to get older and ride the same veterans that brought them to glory in 2018. Alexander Ovechkin is 73 goals away from Wayne Gretzky for the all time goal record, and that seems to be all they are playing for.
Peter Laviolette was dismissed for Spencer Carberry, rejoining the organization after time as the associate coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and reuniting him with Rasmus Sandin and former Hershey Bears players.
Washington’s minor team, the Hershey Bears, are the new Calder Cup champions, leading the AHL with 12 titles. The prospects are still competing in camp, but the veterans departed to Europe for more money.
IN
Max Paccioretty signed a low term low dollar deal after an injury plagued season.
Joel Edmundsson was acquired via trade from Montreal at half salary retention.
Matthew Phillips, the reigning AHL point leader signed a one year deal
To fill out the AHL roster: Chase Priskie returns, Alex Limoges and Pierrick Dube signed.
Ryan Howard and Andrew Cristall were drafted with their first two picks in the draft. Future studs.
Spencer Carberry is the new head coach.
Mitch Love is the new assistant coach.
OUT
Shane Gersich signed with the Swedish 2nd league.
Henrik Borgstrom signed with HV71
Gabriel Carlsson signed with Valaxo in SHL
Connor Brown signed with the Edmonton Oilers.
Carl Hagelin retired due to a career threatening eye injury.
Craig Smith signed with Dallas.
Matt Irwin joined Vancouver.
Sam Anas signed in the KHL.

For tonight’s roster, it is Ovi and the kids against the young and hungry Jackets, the ones that are in dire straits to make the main squad.

Players to Watch
Washington - Ivan Miroshnichenko — the banter between him and Ovi has been great this preseason. Miro was born the year Ovi was drafted. He could become their top winger in a few years. This is a great showcase for Ovi and the kids to ride out their rebuild (that they should go towards).
Columbus - Dmitry Vokornov - young Russian against the young Russians. The Machine never breaks. This will be fun to them out there.
Predicted Final Score
WSH - 5
CBJ - 4

Closing Note
Sergei Ivanov has been traded on loan from SKA St. Petersburg to Admiral Vladivostok. Cool way to get more ice time for and then go back SKA in the meanwhile.
