The Columbus Blue Jackets lose their home opener to the Philadelphia Flyers, but that is shaded by the injury to defender Zach Werenski. The final score of the game was 4-2 for the Flyers.
Period I
Joel Farabee opened the scoring for the evening with his first of the season. The returning Sean Couturier had the primary assist; Egor Zamula had the secondary.
Jake Bean evened the game off a rush rebound off the goaltender’s pad to be the first Blue Jackets’ goal scorer. Adam Fantilli had the primary assist, his first career point. Kirill Marchenko started the season with a secondary assist, and not a goal.
Travis Konecny had the go ahead goal late in the first for his first of the season. Scott Laughton had the lone apple.
Period II
The kneeing incident between Garnet Hathaway and Zach Werenski occurred.
No goal scoring.
Period III
Three goals were scored in the final 90 seconds.
Cam Atkinson put up the game winning goal on an empty net against his former club for his first of the season. Carter Hart had the assist.
Patrik Laine replied back late for his first of the year; Marchenko and captain Boone Jenner had the helpers.
Konecny had his second of the game and season with one second left on the empty net. Laughton and Travis Sanheim had the final assists.
Elvis Merzlikins had 32 saves on 34 shots for a 0.941 save percentage.
Carter Hart had 31 saves on 33 shots for a 0.939 save percentage.
Cam Atkinson was my Columbus player to watch, having the game winning goal on the empty net. This was his first career goal against the Jackets as part of the Flyers. He had 3 shots on goal in 16:11TOI.
Ivan Provorov had -2 rating with 3 shots on goal in 25:11TOI.
Hathaway Fined
Unjustified. He injured the top defenseman with a knee on knee incident behind the Columbus net. Dangerous and dirty play. $5,000
to injury someone? Ridiculous action by the league.
Zach Werenski is out the next two weeks with a quad contusion. This slides Adam Boqvist back in the lineup.
CBJ THREE STARS OF THE GAME
1. Jake Bean — goal (1)
2. Patrik Laine — goal (1)
3. Adam Fantilli — first career NHL point
