The Columbus Blue Jackets fell to NHL and Canadian hockey history in a 4-1 defeat from the red hot oil of Edmonton.
The Edmonton Oilers have become the first Canadian team to ever win 14 consecutive games. Blue Jackets’ legend Sam Gagner has become the first and only player in league history to be on multiple teams with 14 game winning streaks.
Ganger was a part of his Renaissance year in Columbus with Torts on the 16-17 Blue Jackets’ 14 game win streak. He is also a part of this run in Edmonton.
This streak ties the two franchises with the fifth longest winning streak in league history at 14.
Edmonton is back baby. Onto the goal scoring results from the contest that was Columbus’ first game of five on their road trip.
Period I
Warren Foegele got the goal scoring started for the home club with his 10th of the season. The former Hurricane had his powerplay goal assisted by Sharks’ legend Evander Kane and the highest paid defender of the Oilers - Darnell Nurse.
Russian rookie sensation Dmitry Voronkov evened the scoring for the first time in 8 minutes for his 10th career professional North American goal. The lone apple came from the resurging Kent Johnson in the final five minutes of the first. They were the only players to produce.
Period III
Atlanta Thrashers’ first round pick Evander Kane recorded the game winning goal less than five minutes into the third period for his 15th goal of the season from Foegle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.
The All Star captain himself, Connor freaking McDavid, extended the Oilers’ lead next with his 17th of the campaign. His co-captain, Leon Drasatil, had the primary assist. Former Penguins’ defender Cody Ceci had the secondary assist.
Dylan Holloway continues his career depth role with his second of the season for the former first rounder. He seems to be not finding his stride in the bottom of the Edmonton offensive structure. His marker was assisted by veterans Connor Brown and Brett Kulak.
Players to Watch
Connor McDavid got his first goal in five games, getting himself over the 60 point mark of the season. He was a 64% in the faceoff dot with five shots on goal in over 21 minutes of ice time.
Rookie Adam Fantilli showed his toughness with 3 hits and shots in 18:58TOI as a -1. He is on a three game pointless streak since the line juggle. Get him back down the middle.
Goaltenders
Stuart Skinner continues to shine after a shaky start to the season. This is his second straight game over 0.960 in save percentage, not losing a game since December 19.
Elvis cold streak continues. Since requesting out, he has not posted above a 0.900 save percentage. He allowed 4 goals on 24 shots.
CBJ 3 Stars of the Game
1. Dmitry Voronkov — goal (10)
2. Kent Johnson — assist (9)
3. Kirill Marchenko — +1, 4SOG, 2 hits
What’s Next?
Final matchup against Calgary in Alberta. Could sweep the Flames in the matchup of the former Flames of Johnny Gaudreau and Erik Gudbranson v current Flames.
I wonder if Markstrom for Merzlikins gets talked about.
Reaction to the News of the Day
Tate McRae as the All Star headline? Laugh. Poor Sillinger. I’m guessing he’s not watching Toronto that weekend.
Jake Bean safe. Good grief. Shame for the program up north as more continues to spill out. This weakens the Metro the most without Carter Hart, Michael McLeod, and Cal Foote. Columbus deals with Calgary next without Dillon Dube.
Utah and hockey? Sure, get ready for Columbus to lose yet another player due to the expansion draft. I wonder how new management will protect the young guns of the roster whenever this comes around.
