The Columbus Blue Jackets are the winners on Jeff Rimer appreciation night, as we are two weeks away from the retirement of his accomplished career. The final score over the rival Penguins is 4-3 in the shootout, bringing the season series to a 3-1 deficit to the Pens.
Period I
Mathieu Olivier opened the scoring of the game shorthanded on Dmitri Voronkov’s hooking minor penalty. His fifth of the season and second in back to back games was assisted by the red hot ex-boyfriend of Tate McRae, Cole Sillinger. Three points in his last two games.
Period II
After scoring the game winner on Thursday, Drew O’Connor tied the game up one a piece for his 13th of the regular season just after the halfway mark of the game. Bryan Rust and Marcus Pettersson had the helpers.
Rust potted the go ahead goal for his 24th of the campaign in the final minute of the frame. Sidney Crosby continues his hot streak with the primary apple. Kris Letang had the secondary cookie.
Period III
Rickard Rakell recorded his 12th of the year from Evgeni Malkin.
Kirill Marchenko responses 11 seconds later for his 19th of the year. Damon Severson and Zach Werenski had the assists.
Werenski tied the game a few moments later for his seventh of the shortened year for him from Johnny Gaudreau.
Overtime
Three shots and no penalties in the five minutes.
Shootout
Damon Severson was awarded the winner after round five in the shootout.
Players to Watch
Sidney Crosby had a minor penalty and primary assist. His 44th assist of the season. He continues to be the main life source of the Penguins’ offense and locker room. He is close to Top 15 in all time league point scoring.
Zach Werenski had a goal and assist. He is one of 3 Jackets’ defensemen to ever record 40 assists in an 82 game season.
Goaltenders
Alex Nedjelkovic had 35 saves on 38 shots faced for a 0.921 save percentage through 65 minutes of action. He allowed 2 of 5 in the shootout.
Elvis Merzlikins had 30 saves on 33 shots for a 0.909 save percentage. He allowed one of five in the shootout.
