The Columbus Blue Jackets begin preseason hockey action with a doubleheader, split squad style action against the 5 time Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins between the Nationwide Arena and the PPG Paints Arena. The road game begins at 1pm, while the home game begins at 7pm.
The Pittsburgh Penguins welcome a revamped defensive unit into the 2022-2023 season, with the veteran addition of Jeff Petry via trade from the Montreal Canadiens with Ryan Phoeling for defenseman Mike Matheson and a 2023 4th round draft selection. The young addition to the Pittsburgh defense came from Ty Smith and a 2023 3rd round draft choice from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for defenseman John Marino. In frrr agency, they added defenders Jan Rutta and Xaiver Oullett. They also added goalie Dustin Tokarski; winger Josh Archibald; and winger Drake Caggiula. In the draft, they selected defenseman Owen Pickering from the WHL.
They said farewell to Evan Rodrigues, who got a pay raise in the joining the Avalanche; forward Brian Boyle; and goalie Louis Domingue, who took his spicy park and broccoli to the Big Apple with the Rangers.
In Columbus, the biggest story coming from camp is the return process for the injured players of last season. Coaching staff and management are patiently easing Boone Jenner, Joonas Korpisalo, and Daniil Tarasov back by having them not participate in the first games of the preseason. Instead, the young kids are getting the shots. Pavel Cajan is starting tomrorow in Pitt; KJ is centering the top line at home.
