Welcome to the second part of ten as we analyze and look through the top ten prospects in the Columbus Blue Jackets pipeline. Additional readings well be displayed of mine as the series progresses.
LD Eric Hjorth (LIGA)
A potential diamond in the rough from Jarmo Kekalainen and crew, the Columbus Blue Jackets traded down in the 2019, and drafted the young Swedish defender as a result.
Hjorth was drafted by Columbus as a member of the Sarnia; however, due to COVID, he decided to venture back to Europe to maintain his potential. His only year with the Sting, the defenseman recorded 29 points (12 goals, 17 assists) in 60 games played.
He split last season between between the SHL and LIGA, collecting 10 points in 27 games in the 2020-2021 campaigns. In 14 games with Sweden, he earned 6 points (2 goals, 4 assists). With KalPa, he earned three points (1 goal, 2 asssits) in 7 games; and while on loan wjth IPK, he recorded one goal in 6 games.
The big frame of the 6 foot 3 tank, Hjorth has displayed a strong goal scoring presence with an adult frame and physical mature stature to track him forward toward his professional career.
His age and track is eerily similar to that of current roster member Gabriel Carlsson. Being a later round steal, he will take additional years before even making the show.
Thoughts on the blue liner? More to come...
