Trick or Treat Tuesday

Happy Halloween Hockey World! Hoping your day is full sweet treats and eats, and spooky scary skeletons. My apologies for being away the last several days due to personal reasons, but I am back and ready to talk about the weekend that was. Let’s start with the most recent; then go with the weekend games missed with the Montreal Canadiens and New York Islanders.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are coming off a defeat against the Dallas Stars on Monday night.

CBJ PG9 @ Dallas Stars

The Columbus Blue Jackets continue their losing streak with a 5-3 loss against the Dallas Stars.

Period I

Thomas Harley opened the scoring 27 seconds for his second of the campaign from Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz.

Dmitry Vokornov evened the game with his first career goal by way of Cole Sillinger and Kent Johnson.

Damon Severson got the road team’s first lead with his first as a Blue Jacket from Adam Fantilli and Zach Werenski.

Period II

Hintz tied the game for his third of the season from Robertson and Nils Lundkvist.

Period III

Blue Jackets’ legend Matt Duchene got his first as a Dallas Star from Ryan Suter and Mason Marchment.

Evgenii Dadanov got the game winner with his second of the season from linemates Wyatt Johnston and Jamie Benn.

Wyatt Johnston put the game away with an empty net goal for his third of the year from Dadanov and Benn.

Sean Kuraly got the final goal of the game for his second this year from Ivan Provorov and Mathieu Olivier.

Jason Robertson was my Stars’ player to watch - having 2 assists, a +1, and 2 shots in 17:03TOI.

Jake Otteinger was not his best allowing 3 goals on 25 shots for a 0.880 save percentage. It’s okay to not play your best against Elvis, as he allows more goals. Merzlikins had 4 goals allowed on 32 shots for a 0.875 save percentage.

Johnny Gaudreau was my Columbus player to watch, as he continues to be ice cold while being the top moneymaker. Pointless tonight, and goalless this year. Johnny Hockey was a -1 with 2 shots on goal in 19:11TOI.

CBJ THREE STARS OF THE GAME

1. Dmitry Vokornov - first career goal

2. Damon Severson - first goal as CBJ

3. Sean Kuraly - goal (2)

CBJ PG 8 @ New York Islanders

The Columbus Blue Jackets four game point streak came to an end with a 2-0 shutout from the New York Islanders.

Period I

Kyle Palmieri had the game winning goal in the final five minutes of the first period with his third of the season. Pierre Engvall and Sebastian Aho had the helpers.

Period III

Matt Martin had the final goal of the game for his first of the season from Casey Cizkas.

Semyon Varlamov stopped all 34 shots faced from the Blue Jackets.

Spencer Martin had 32 saves on 34 shots for a 0.941 save percentage.

CBJ THREE STARS OF THE GAME

1. Spencer Martin - 94.1 SV%, 32 saves

2. Boone Jenner - 4SOG, 66 FO%, -1, 22:25TOI

3. Jack Roslovic - 5SOG, 25 FO%, -1

CBJ PG7 @ Montreal Canadiens

The Columbus Blue Jackets blew their lead to the home Montreal Canadiens with an overtime loss. The final score was 4-3.

Period I

Jack Roslovic opened the scoring with his second goal of the season. His point streak continues at four games. Johnny Gaudreau and Zach Werenski had the assists.

Emil Bemstrom extended the lead for his second of the year. This was his second straight game with a goal. Ivan Provorov extended his point streak with a primary assist. Roslovic had the secondary assist. This was a power play goal.

Period II

Nick Suzuki broke the shutout for the Canadiens’ first goal of the game and his first of the season just 27 seconds into the period, Unassisted.

Bemmer responded with his second powerplay goal of the game and third of the season. Roslovic had the primary assist. Dmitri Vokornov had the secondary assist for his first career NHL point.

Michael Matheson potted a powerplay goal with 17 seconds left for his second of the year. Suzuki and Cole Caufield had the helpers.

Period III

Sean Monahan tied the game on the powerplay for his third of the season courtesy of Caufield and Matheson.

Overtime

Cole Caufield registered the game winning goal with only 43 seconds remaining in the extra time for his fourth of the year. Suzuki and Jordan Harris had the assists.

Samuel Montembault was the starter for Montreal, having 33 saves on 36 shots for a 0.917 save percentage.

Caufield was my Habs’ player to watch, having 3 points and 8 shots with a +1.

Ivan Provorov was my Blue Jackets’ player to watch as was riding a three game point streak to see if he would get his first goal. He did not get a goal, but he did keep his point streak alive with a primary assist. He was -1 with 23:11TOI.

Elvis Merzlikins had 25 saves on 29 shots for a 0.862 save percentage.

CBJ THREE STARS OF THE GAME

1. Jack Roslovic - goal (2), 2 assists (4)

2. Emil Bemstrom - 2 goals (3)

3. Ivan Provorov - assist (6)

Fan-Gate

Crazy to see the overtime game between the Cleveland Monsters and Grand Rapids Griffins, with a delay go the game from the fans costing the Griffins a home game victory.

Grand Rapids was doing a fundraiser event and a section of fans were throwing rubber pucks during play late in the game. They were ejected, but cost them the game.

Hockey Tragedy

I’m saddened to report the recent hockey losses of Matthew Perry from FRIENDS at the age of 54 from a reported cardiac arrest in a jacuzzi and former Penguin Adam Johnson at the age of 29 after a scary skate incident in an English Hockey game.

Sad hockey weekend.
