RFA Adam Boqvist : What to do?

Adam Boqvist is a Swedish right handed defenseman currently playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL. He was originally drafted 8th overall in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks.

He is the youngest of the in his family, where his older brother — Jesper Boqvist — was selected 36th overall in the 2nd round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft to the New Jersey Devils.

Boqvist, 21, has competed in his first three NHL seasons, even though they were all shortened. His first two, in the COVID shortened bubble seasons, and the third was due to injuries. In his career, he has earned 51 points in 128 games. Making him now a RFA.

Adam Boqvist just completed his entry level contract, signed with with the Chicago Blackhawks. Boqvist was selected by the Hawks with the 8th overall draft selection in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

The Swedish defenseman had 29 points in 76 regular season games with Chicago (6 goals, 23 assists), and pointless in 8 playoff games during the COVID bubble. With the Blackhawks’ agenda to win now, they made a move to mortgage the future in a move to accelerate that motion for Chicago, finding their partner from the bubble.

With the need, Boqvist joined the Columbus Blue Jackets via trade with two first round draft picks and a second round draft pick for defenseman Seth Jones, a first round pick, and a sixth round pick. With Boqvist, the first round pick turned into Cole Sillinger at the 12th overall slot in the 2021 draft. The second round pick was flipped to the Carolina Hurricanes for defenseman Jake Bean. The other first round pick will be selected at the 6th overall on July 7.

Boqvist had a season high in goals in one season with 11, while also matching 11 in assists, for 22 points in 52 games. Per Quant Hockey, his 51 career points in 128 games has him tied with Adam Pelech (NYI) and Anton Stralman (ARI) with that many points since 2019 through present day in the regular season. 51 points also has him 10th in his draft class per HockeyReference.

Zach Werenski had 128 in 237 games in his first three seasons, for an average of 0.54 points per game.


Jake Bean’s 37 points in 111 games is 0.33PPG

Seth Jones’ 63 points in 199 games is 0.31PPG

Ryan Murray’s 49 points in 160 games is a 0.3PPG

Jones’ first contract after his ELC was with Columbus due to the Ryan Johansen. His deal was at$5.4am for six years.

Murray’s first contract was at $2.825M for two years.

Werenski’s second pro contract was 3 years, $5M per season.

Bean is the only one that hasn’t obtained a second contract.

All of these will have been signed by Jarmo Kekalainen. Where does Boqvist land?
