Daren Dreger, while certainly an insider, is an NHL yes man for public consumption. I have no doubt that he is tipped off to news and does have his sources, but he is the type of media member that will cozy up to an organization and keep something hushed/leak it upon request dependent on some sort of back room handshake deal. No doubt about that at all.

The NHL is an old boy's network - in the modern age of communications this includes:

Team Personnel
Media (the so called "MSM")
Players
Agents

One hand will wash the other. Any more proof needed than the NBA offer sheets that fly around? No one seems to have "the code" in that league and signings - with players signing sheets actually leaving - actually happen with regularity.

Another point would be the endless twitter posting by Alan Walsh - Octagon Sports Agent extraordinaire - trying to debunk all the rumour guys on the internet. They close ranks around their little kingdom and incestually work with each other. Once you're in you're in to stay; cross that line? The dark side of the moon could not be colder. (aka the dreaded black list) Why do you think it is so hard to bring in new coaches and GM's from outside of these ranks? Occasionally a guy will work his way up from the minors, but more often than not they're recycled until they die, retire or cross the wrong person and get sent packing. (see: M Keenan, T Nolan, N Smith, S Moore, etc)

Now I'm not saying that Eklund and all these other anonymous rumour guys with websites and twitter accounts are a) right all the time, b) connected in any way or c) making it all up, but let's not pretend guys like Daren Dreger don't have agendas too they are moving forward.

This scenario walks and talks too much like the Duck that is MLSE calling and saying "Daren, put this fire out for us". Burke likes to deal in the shadows and this has gotten all too public...

All this being said, there is no reason to get a guy like Bernier for this team; get someone experienced or dance with who brung ya'.
