Mike Rupp was on the bench when Crosby got dropped, didn't stop anything. Fighters can't hit back since they are slow and have 3 minutes of ice-time, so why should I fear a guy who will not see any playing time and who I could just say "(frank) you I won't fight." If the fighter jumps him then he gets the instigator and the guy is laughing. Aka Kaleta/Avery/Lappierre who are the masters of this. How did the Habs do with George Laraque the best fighter in the league? Nobody would fight him so how is he protecting his team? The 80's and 90's are over.

Laroque sucked at everything but fighting ...Orr may be the same ...gotta get that guy that can skate, hit, be responsible and fight/intimidate enough to keep the Kessel's safe. |

Shawn Thornton disagrees. Torres and the other 'Nuck rats became useless awfully quick when he got into the lineup. And guys like Marchand became more effective.
I agree generally ...but, IMHO, fighters who can play their 5-10 minutes are still assets.
Hockey still has to value the intimidation factor.

Ya but it's the reality. You need players that can fight, not fighters that can't play.
Besides the best fights are ones with emotion and impromptu bouts, not staged centre ice "Ok you wanna go?" "Ya ok" "Nice fight see you on Thursday" "How's the wife and kids?"

with a line matching coach like carlyle the leafs will have very specific roles to play on each particular line
under wilson yes, under carlyle, no.. the third line will be a traditional checking line

Agreed ...and the signing of McLement probably signalled this. 2nd line ..is the second best scoring line ....3rd line is a checking line (forecheck, skate hard, kill penalties and hem the other teams best players in their own end) that hopefully can score a few too. |
