Actually I have great news. I just saved......... I mean... Kevin Freiheit reports that the deal is actually 7 years for $1 million. That's thrifty shopping! Makes much more sense than what's been reported. $7 million for a guy who shows up occasionally? Surrrrreeeee

They don't need him, for leadership. They have 2 Staal's and Skinner for that. All he has to do is produce points. This move probably solidifies Carolina's place in the playoffs. How much in gate revenue do you think that's worth? 3 playoff games, would pretty much pay for his contract. Then there is advertising revenue, to make money off of. Who knows, maybe they win a round. Any team that has two Staal's, Skinner and Cam Ward, has a chance at being a good darkhorse team, once they hit the playoffs. I wouldn't cackle too hard at that, Cloutier, it's a good move. |

Semin: Gets points; has a terrible attitude and doesn't care. Will help the Hurricanes roughly the same amount as he'll hurt them.
Hemsky: Injured frequently, but has a good attitude and does care. Would help a team more than hurt it if he could stay healthy.
Just thought I'd provide a summary of my blog since you obviously didn't read it. - Maxbone
Saying Hemsky could help a team if he stay's healthy is like saying Semin could help a team if he changes his attitude.
Either way, Semin is more skilled than Hemsky and is a pure sniper. On a one year deal this contract is fine. Also if the Hurricanes go bust this season they will be able to turn him into some combination of draft picks and prospects as a rental. |

Enigmatic UFA forward Ales Semin signed a one-year, $7mil contract today with the Carolina Hurricanes. Lame. What a terrible signing.
Hey Richard...you need to do some research before you blog.
Car was well below the cap floor, so they needed to find a way(s) to get up there. Spending 2-3 mil over what Semin is worth is a ZERO risk way not only gettting a talented player, but also getting closer to the cap floor.
Semin wanted a multi year deal which would have been less than 7 mil, probably 5-5.5 if it was for 2-3 years. Car can now give him a chance to earn that multi year deal....if he doesnt, they just dont re-sign him.
Reading mindless blogs like this shows why most bloggers are lame at best. |

Comparing Hemsky and Semin's talent levels is a bit of a stretch. Semin lazy, Hemsky always hurt... I'll take lazy.
Besides, at least Semin will drop the mitts and duke it out once in a while, well... slap it out?

That's absolutely ridiculous. How can you build a winning team with lazy players? You can't even run a business with lazy workers. That's stupid. Affects the culture of the team and attitude of everyone on board. As long as you show up to every game you play, there's nothing wrong with the player in my opinion. Hemsky is not made of glass, he's one of the hardest working players in the NHL, takes a beating more than most players. Watch an oilers game, targeted more than other players. Comparable to Jaromir Jagr in that respect. |

It's a one year deal and Carolina didn't have to give up anything. I see no problems. |

It's a no risk signing. If he shows up then they can sign him long term. If not, than its one year, no big deal, and like you said, they can trade him at the deadline, albeit an expensive way to get something back. I think its a good move along witht he Staal trade. Gives him two options of great centers to find chemistry with,

Nice play, but no. Semin toe drags around Weber's reaching stick. Ennis shoots over a stick, the toe drag wasn't used to dodge a reaching stick.

Its a one year deal. Carolina didnt risk the future on Semin. Semin puts up points and stays healthy. He def has more value than Hemsky. If Hemmer were to put up a few 70game seasons things would def be diff.
Not to mention Carolina isnt a market most players just want to sign in. Its a market where you have to overpay to sign people - poisondhearts37
and Hemsky is only 2 and 2 million less per yet all the morons around here are all "hurrr hurrrrr wat a bad contractz!" Funny. |

watch the slo-mo....he toe dragged away from the pokecheck of phillips..same kind of play...
not trying to put down semins effort, but it is a very common move. no doubt it takes skill to do it, but semin isnt worth 7 mil. i wouldnt (as a sabre fan where we dont have a lot of cap room) pay him more than 4.5 mil for 1 year. doesnt play with any heart. |

You are new here so i will explain. Pilgor claims to be the only Black Zamboni driver in NA. No one has seen Pilgor so this could all be made up - ruttager17
Pilgor is definitely black.
I read it on HockeyBuzz, so I guess that ends the discussion.

This comment would be better suited when comparing two players of equal production and health.

Thats the price of free agents though. You save assets aquiring them, but have to pay through the arse. Especially in markets like Carolina and Buffalo. You guys had to do it with Leino last summer. |

Personally I think Semin gets a bit of a bad rap, and I'm not certain why. He seemed to buy into Hunter's system last year (maybe because he didn't have much of a choice, I wouldn't want to get into Dale's bad books). Gets 0.66 points per game in the playoffs throughtout his career yet everyone says "he disappears".
Have to disagree with you on this one Richard, even though the money is big I think the term Carolina got him for is low risk and high potential reward. - bazmagoo
I agree with bazmagoo, Richard, You are just mailing it in with this one. Semin is a good player and is A LOT better than Hemsky. The guy gets a bad rap due to bigotry and stereotypes against russian players. The guy is solid in the playoffs and skews towards offense whenever he is on the ice thereby reducing any chances the other team has when he's on the ice.
The guy isn't a liability. I would have like the Canucks to sign him, but they weren't going to pay him more than they do the Sedins...
