You don’t believe that statements about whether the governing body recognizes gay marriage is a political issue? Seriously?
You’re telling me that it makes sense, that he thinks he’s doing something positive for someone, by denying them the right to do something they want?
You keep ignoring that he used the word arrogant. Is that not insulting someone? - prock
How is he denying anyone anything??? Is he stepping into churches and stopping marriages???

There's a difference between simply having beliefs, and using them to deny others civil rights. That's the main issue. No one's "religious convictions" should trump the importance of equality. - Jack-artist
Dan Cathy is NOT denying anyone any of their rights. I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think (in the USA) that there is a "right" to get married..............but I'm pretty sure there is "right" for people to practise their Religion.
Dan Cathy did not state his views on marriage in a public condemnation of gay marriage.
He was answering questions in an interview by a reporter for a Southern Baptist newspaper.............literally preaching to the choir.
Someone found and read the interview and made the statements public as part on their defence of gay marriage.
Dan Cathy is entitled to his beliefs and it his his "right" to express them.
If individuals want to boycott or support his business, then let them............but he should not be forced to apologize for his religious beliefs. |

It's quite obvious that most of you are missing the point I'm trying to make.
I have not come down in favour of either side of this issue of gay marriage. Dan Cathy believes it's wrong, and the gay community believes it's their right.
Now step back from this issue, and see where I'm coming from. I am supporting Dan Cathy's right of freedom of religion and freedom of speech.
It's that simple.
Those of you who support gay marriage, seem to think it's okay to bash and insult Dan Cathy for exercising his constitutional "rights" of freedom of speech and religion.
Those of you who support gay marriage, seem to think it's okay to call for a boycott of Dan Cathy's business, because they were "offended" when he exercised his constitutionally protected freedom of speech.
Remember, there is no "Right" not to be offended.
These are two issues, and I'm not surprised that some of you can't see that.
Each side of this issue has their rights of freedom of speech and religious beliefs.
However one side seems to want to silence the other (deny the right to freedom of speech), because they don't agree.
If you support the gay community's right to freedom of speech on a given issue................ then you have to support (equally) Dan Cathy's right to freedom of speech on any or the same issue.
Now do you get the point I've been trying to make???

Chick-fil-A didn't respond directly when asked for a comment on Cathy's statements but issued its own statement that said in part: "The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect -- regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender."
In the Baptist Press interview, Cathy said his stance against same-sex marriage "might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles."

FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) -- Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary will be buying chicken sandwiches for faculty, staff and students on Aug. 1 to show its support for Chick-Fil-A as part of a nationwide initiative launched by former presidential candidate and Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.
Beginning at 11:30 a.m. Central time, the Fort Worth seminary expects to purchase more than 200 sandwiches at the local Chick-fil-A in Fort Worth.
In light of harsh criticism and calls for boycotts of the company after Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy recently stood for the biblical definition of marriage, Huckabee is urging people to visit the restaurant on Aug. 1 for "Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day." Huckabee, who was honored as a distinguished alumnus by Southwestern Seminary in June, created the website ISupportChickfilA.com where people can "RSVP" that they intend to participate Aug. 1. More than 125,000 have signed up.
"No one is being asked to make signs, speeches, or openly demonstrate," Huckabee wrote on the site. "The goal is simple: Let's affirm a business that operates on Christian principles and whose executives are willing to take a stand for the Godly values we espouse by simply showing up and eating at Chick-Fil-A on Wednesday, August 1."

No one has ever said he doesn’t have the right to say the things he said. No one ever said he doesn’t have the freedom of religion. We’ve merely said he’s an idiot. Which, by the way is, a) nothing worse that he has said about several other groups, and b) within our freedom to speech as well. So, yes, I feel it’s within my freedoms to “insult” Dan Cathy. It sure as hell seemed within his.
Again, as with every other part of your incredibly stupid argument, however, your accusing others of doing exactly what the side your defending is. Think about it. You’re trying to argue that the gay community shouldn’t be allowed to boycott his business. Or they shouldn’t be allowed to fire back at the comments he made, and in doing so, they’re in the wrong.
Quite simply, they’re not in the wrong. If ANYONE is in the wrong, it’s most definitely Dan Cathy. HE is the one advocating that certain groups of society be denied the rights that others have. If you can’t see that there is infinitely more harm in that than calling someone an idiot, and choosing not to buy their products, then you are clearly more stupid than everyone thinks. It’s his right to express it. But it still makes him an idiot. |

The issue is a little different than you amke it out to be.
He is a public figure having such a large business. His opinion reaches many people world wide, and he has shown a prejudice against homosexuals.
Normally this would simply be frowned upon as a simple expression of views, but at the moment it is more than that.
Currently gay marriage is illegal in many states across the US. He is making these comments while homosexuals are being opressed and denied the same rights as everyone else. Because of this, his public comments are in facthelping to prevent the movement of equal rights among the community.
This would be the same as someone int he past opposing women's rights when they still dont have the right to vote.
If there was alreay equal rights int he ay community, simply expressing your opinion that you believe differently would get less attention,b ut seeing the current situation, I am against him openly stating this to the general public.
Public figures need to be more careful than the average person with their comments. |

Nice Spin.
I have not stated that the gay community should not be allowed to boycott his business.
Also he is not stating that the Gay community be denied anything.
He does not agree that they should be allowed because of his beliefs...............but he is not in any position to deny them anything.
If I'm wrong then prove it, show me where he is " advocating that certain groups of society be denied the rights that others have".
Again, both sides of this issue are allowed to express their views................but there is one side hurling insults and boycotting his business simply for exercising his freedom of speech rights.
I thought you would not be able to see the POV I'm coming from.
I cheer for the Ottawa Senators, and think that you should too.
Am I denying your right to cheer for the leafs simply because I think you're wasting your time sheering for a team that not won a Cup in 45ish years, and should now cheer for a team that has a better chance at winning a Cup???
I'll say a prayer for you tonight, so that you'll awake a Sens fan.

He is not a "public figure". Never has been, never heard of him until someone unearthed this interview where he spoke from his heart. His opinion does not reach millions worldwide.
He lives his life according to his religious beliefs, and some people are unhappy with this, and are using it as a tool to further their agenda.

So in fairness and equality, should those who are bashing him and insulting him for his religious beliefs also should "shut the hell up"?
Is it only the side you agree with, that should be allowed to say whatever they want, to further their agenda?

So you would like to Censor Tim Thomas.
Censorship reflects society's lack of confidence in itself and it is a hallmark of an authoritarian regime. Last time I looked, Tim Thomas is an American and has the right to express his opinion, whether you or anyone else like it or not.

Anyone who looks down on a group of people (who aren't hurting anyone) for being themselves, or being different is an idiot. Correct. If you judge gay people for simply being gay, you're an idiot as well.
I have several gay friends, and they're the nicest people you'll ever meet.
People need to stop being so damn narrow minded and ignorant.

Why do the beliefs of gays trump those that don't agree with them?
You're judging a certain group for their views, and not judging another group for their.

Apparently you are wrong about this.
He owns a public company that operates all across the United states. In that way, his opinion, if deemed prejudice, will reach that many people. I assumed this was apparent given that it just happened. |
