Not to mention, taking away the right to strike from professions that by no means fall under the "essential services" category.
Awfully right-wing for a liberal politician. - Feeling Glucky?
I wish the teachers would shut up about their pay, when it’s perfectly adequate, along with plenty of vacation, and a huge pension too. But I’m not sure he’s going about it the right way. |

The average high school teacher in Ontario makes over $80,000, they get 10 weeks of summer vacation, 2 weeks at Christmas, 1 week at March break. That’s 13 weeks. Plus they get vacation days, and bank their sick days (2 a month I believe it used to be, not sure what it is now).
So, 39 weeks of work a year. Compared to the average of 49 for everyone else. Pro-rate that, and working a full year, like everyone else, it’s a 6 figure salary.
How can these people whine and moan? They’re doing fine.

Yeah, I can't stand McGuinty.
Ontario has been paying equalization payments since they've began though. So, let's not crap on Ontario for that.
It speaks volumes about McGuinty though. 50 years or something like that, he's the FIRST to push Ontario into negative equalization payments.
It shocks me.... Does ANYONE in Ontario like this guy? Most of the traditionally liberal groups here can't stand him anymore. - prock
You're correct. Equalization started in 1957 (I think) and Quebec has been a taker EVERY single year, and has TAKEN ONE HALF of the total amount doled out over the entire lifespan of equalization.
Ontario has only been a taker for the past four years. |

Sad thing is you're absolutely correct.
Quebecers have no intention of ever separating, and have no intention of ever giving up the threat to separate.
Threatening to do so gets them tons of cash (tax dollars) from "have" provinces.
Leaving Canada would be devastating to Quebec.

I know, man... It blows my mind. Plus they get every weekend off. It seems like the people who have it the best are the ones who usually do most of the complaining. I want to punch a teacher in the face. |

Every weekend off? LOL, okay.
They work hard, I get that. I don't personally see that they work any harder than the average Joe though. No different.... And they do an important job.
I'm not going to sit here and say they're overpaid. They're not. They deserve what they make, as far as I'm concerned. But they're also certainly not underpaid, and when their unions start this BS, it drives me insane.
Bugger off, you're doing just fine. |

The only teachers I've seen work during weekends were college/university profs, and they don't get the summers off.
I've never seen a teacher who taught k-12 work a weekend... Unless it's the odd workshop or some sh1t like that. Sure they have to correct tests, but in my experience, the majority of that stuff is completed during/between class time, and immediately after class. Classes here end 2:30-3:00 PM, so they have 2-2.5 hours per day or 10-15 hours per week to correct tests/finger-painting projects. |

I wasn't disputing that. More, that's pretty normal as far as I'm concerned.

elementary school teachers make less, and IMO, teachers should be amongst the highest paid members of society, seeing as it's their work that ensures future generations actually do something. |

yeaa... false. Got 2 teachers in the family, they work most weekends... and come report card season, they're really doing a lot.
Not to mention putting up with the parents of idiot kids, who complain about their idiot kids getting poop marks.
My sister's had a few parents complain and even tried to get her fired for because their idiot kids got low grades. |

Same can be said about any profession.
Don't need the government against you, though. And it's not just about teachers, removing the right to strike is setting a very dangerous precedent.

I actually have four teachers in my family (one being a principal), and two of my close friends are also teachers... They do (frank) all during the weekends. Two are from Alberta, and four are from Newfoundland. Could be different in Ontario, I don't know (I doubt it though)... I do know for a fact that they (the teachers I know) do absolutely nothing during the weekends though. I just don't see it being that difficult to correct a 5-17 year old's work. |

There are more people who are qualified for teaching than there are jobs. If all things were equal they'd probably get paid LESS than they are now. |

That's great, and if you read on, I say close to the same thing. I don't complain about what they're paid, but they need to shut the hell up, and stop complaining. They have nothing to complain about. They have a pretty good deal. |

There are periods that they put a little extra time in. And we hear about it for ages. The thing is, I don't know anyone in a decent job in the private sector that doesn't put extra hours in here and there. They're not doing anything out of the ordinary.
Side note on grading papers.... high school teachers get time in their schedule with no classes for this also. |

To be fair, the teachers in my family are french teachers, so they've gotta correct the work for either the whole school or half the school |

IMO the whole education system is (frank)ed up... but you should be super-qualified to be a teacher(already, you do need 2 degrees, which is more than most jobs), and they should be equally compensated, to ensure you have the best of the brightest educating the future generation. |

They're not complaining about what they're getting paid, they're complaining about the wage freeze that they're not allowed to strike against. When you take inflation into consideration the wage freeze is in fact a yearly downgrade in their pay. Not to mention new teachers, who don't make anywhere near that 80,000(my sister has been working for nearly a decade, and she's not up there yet), they're going to be set back 2 years worth of raises. I don't think anyone in any industry wouldn't complain about a deal like that.
And again, it's not just teachers- doctors are next- in Dalton's own words- wonder how many of them are gonna say (frank) it and move to the states to make more? That's another thing we don't need less of, when there are communities in Ontario that are critically understaffed medically. And lets not forget firefighters, their turn is coming too.
I think McGuinty is doing a wonderful job campaigning for the NDP |

- Feeling Glucky?
I see, so they're not complaining about what they're getting paid. Just that it won't be more next year. And the year after. That's TOTALLY different.
So, I guess they're exempt from the wage freezes that 90% of the rest of society is under right now? Perfect.
When you take inflation into consideration the wage freeze is in fact a yearly downgrade in their pay.

just like the rest of the world.

- Feeling Glucky?
And that's totally weird, because I know the minute I left school, and started in the financial industry, companies were lined up around the corner to pay me $80K a year. Obviously that's a totally realistic expectation for teachers too then.
, and she's not up there yet), they're going to be set back 2 years worth of raises.
- Feeling Glucky?
And, as pointed out, she should have been getting that $80K for the past 10 years already, so that's just a travesty.
I don't think anyone in any industry wouldn't complain about a deal like that.
- Feeling Glucky?
about what deal.... $80K a year? BUT THEY ARE COMPLAINING.
And again, it's not just teachers- doctors are next- in Dalton's own words- wonder how many of them are gonna say (frank) it and move to the states to make more?
- Feeling Glucky?
I'm not going to start trying to anticipate what group and their salaries may be up for negotiation next. Go ahead if you want to, but I'm not going to tie what a doctor does to what a teacher does.
That's another thing we don't need less of, when there are communities in Ontario that are critically understaffed medically. And lets not forget firefighters, their turn is coming too.
- Feeling Glucky?
Yep, let's totally tie completely different professions with completely different payscales to your argument as a way of trying to strengthen your argument.
I think McGuinty is doing a wonderful job campaigning for the NDP - Feeling Glucky?
I'm not even sure what you mean by that. |
