I think at least subconsciously, people who are against gay marriage are homophobic. There really is no other reason to be against it. It's the same idea as those who were against interracial marriages all those decades ago(sadly not that many)... You don't want people who you see as beneath you to have the same rites as you, because that makes them seem like your equal.
Churches have made far more radical changes to the idea of marriage than allowing homosexual marriage(ie, allowing divorce because a king wanted it). There's 1 verse in the new testament where Jesus describes marriage, and while he says it is between a man and a woman, he doesn't say it can't be between two women(in fact, even the old testament only forbids sex between men, says nothing about some sexy lesbo action) or two men, He just mentions a man and a woman, because that is the norm for marriage. It's hardly a rule written in stone.
The only thing strictly against homosexuality is one line in the old testament in leviticus, saying two men having sex the way a man and a woman do is wrong. That's it. And if christians followed everything from the old testament, they'd be celebrating the sabbath, not going to mass on sunday, they'd be 100% pro-communism, and we'd have a massive outcry any time a restaurant tried to make a pepperoni pizza, or a cheeseburger.
Oh, and no booze, premarital sex, or downloading poop online. - Feeling Glucky?
This is kind of my point, how in the world does the church have the ability to alter what's right and wrong when the whole faith is based on the bible. "Those things that god hated before ... yeah he's not so hung up on them now". The whole faith thing is sort of baffling to me. To me if you have enough conviction to live your life according to this set of rules and be adamant that those rules are the only "proper" way to live then you can't just sluff them off when they're inconvenient.

Well, I can't speak for all sects of Christianity, but the way I understood it(not from my catholic school mind you, but from talking to other Christians), the old testament is more or less just there for parables, and the rules to live by are the ones Jesus brought along. Which are all about peace and happiness and all that stuff. |

Because we believe people who use religion to disguise homophobia are just as bigoted as those who are outright homophobic. . - Feeling Glucky?
WOW............Religious people use Religion to disguise homophobia.................now that's the biggest spin ever.
So I guess using your warped logic, anyone who marries a member of the opposite sex is just doing it to disguise how homophobia and bigoted they really are.
That's got to be the biggest conspiracy of all time buddy.

Why can't everyone just live their own lives? Why do they have to force their opinions on others? What makes one person right, and the other wrong? Who am I to tell another person how to live? My god, some people are so (frank)ing arrogant... It amazes me. - laughs2907
I agree..............the gay community should NOT be trying to force their opinions on others.

Opinions? They are being denied a right to equality. This is on a similar level to women not getting to vote, blacks as slaves, etc... It is denial of the same rights for any people. You are denying their rights to get married. Straight people have the right, but gays don't. That is equality!? You are telling me that the people fighting for their right to equality should not try ad make people realize they are equals? Wow... I am really unimpressed here.. |

Honest question ... Tim Thomas completely aside ... How do you reconcile being christian and being pro-gay marriage? If you believe in the bible and live your life accordingly, shouldn't you be fundamentally opposed to it? Not being religious myself I have a hard time understanding how so many "religious" people can pick and choose which tenets to live by? Either you're christian and sins are sins as defined by the source of your religion or you aren't.
If I were gay ... a) I'd be fabulous ... b) there is no way in hell I could be christian. Spiritual? Sure, but I don't see how you can be selectively faithful.
Edit: This post should come across as pro-gay marriage, anti-institutional religion ... not vice versa. - Double_A

So you've heard of him before this issue? When a where did he give a speech about his outlook on life, on a speaking tour???
Let's get realistic here. He owns a family owned business, who caters to the public, and he live his life according to his beliefs.
He was dragged into the Issue of gay marriage, by those who saw him as a target because of his religious views.
He was not politically correct when he was interviewed, and nor should he have been.
All those people who seem to think that everyone has to be politically correct in order "not to offend" someone, are basically advocating censorship.
I'll say it again, there is no right to "not be offended" by someone who has the right of free speech.
The gay community, who are attaching him, were offended by his statements. Well to bad so sad, let me call you a waahhbulance. - Doppleganger
aside from using the word "waahhbulance", you're spot on with each point.

Cathy came under scrutiny after he told the Baptist Press he was "guilty as charged" when it came to supporting "the biblical definition of the family unit."
He wasn't exactly protesting in front of a Turkish bathhouse.....he was asked a question, and answered it honestly.
Now all of the Democrat politicians who want to rally the gay vote for Obama are tripping over themselves to show how much they support their lifestyle.
Funny how Bostons Mayor, "Mumbles" Menino, who opened up the city to litigation by attempting to keep Chik Fil A out because they disagreed with his social opinion on the matter, didn't say a freakin word when Imam Al-Qaradawi, who has a prominent role in the Boston Mosque that was built under Menino's watch, about his views on the gays.
"Some say we should throw them from a high place, like God did with the people of Sodom. Some say we should burn them"
Interesting opinion. Sounds a little more inflamatory than Cathys support of "the biblical definition of the family unit." But who am I to point out a liberals double standard? |

And then...
In a separate interview on the Ken Coleman Show — Cathy suggested that the nation could face God’s wrath over the redefinition of marriage.
“I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, ‘We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage,’” Cathy said. “ I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we would have the audacity to try to redefine what marriage is all about.”

These people are using religion as an excuse to attack people who are different than they are. They need to learn to live their own lives, and respect the views of others (as long as these "others" aren't hurting anyone of course). If anyone is being arrogant, it's people like Dan Cathy.
If some of these religious people want to point a finger, perhaps they should be focusing on some of their priests... You all know what I mean... |

They aren't using it as an excuse....they believe it, and they are allowed to believe it. And you're grouping them all together by using a demeaning "these people"
Funny you should bring up the priests, particularly the ones in Boston, since that was a gay subculture under the guise of being religious.
As for arrogance......2000 years of recorded history is way off.....it took a hadful of judges in The Peoples Republic of Massachusetts to tell us all we've been wrong about marriage for all that time. They know the true meaning....thank god they got here to explain it to us and to save us from ourselves |

"These people" as in those who feel they have a right to tell others how they live... Right. Not "all" Christians, obviously... You seriously didn't understand that?
Why can't they just live their own lives? Why do they have to belittle others who do not share the same view as they do? It seems arrogant that certain people believe they have a right to tell others how to live. It's like a Jew telling me I'm arrogant, and Earth will feel God's wrath if I order pork at my local restaurant. |

I think that's the crux of the matter right there. Whether what any of us believe is "right" or "wrong", we all have a right to believe it. Now there's obviously an obligation to respect your fellow man regardless of your beliefs which is what Glucker and Laughs are getting at. Very fine line. |

If there is an obligation to respect you fellow man, then is it not Chik-a-fila's responsibility to respect the gay communities desire for marriage?
If anyone is getting mad at the gay community for being upset witht he president of the company's remarks, and are supporting his freedom of speech, then you are being a hypocrite.
If he voices his opinion, expect people to answer back. Simple as that. |
