Agreed. - Giroux_Is_God
The more money they can free up the better chance they have at building a new core of guys. Add that with the mix of young talent they are getting back and this team will be right there again. |

Any idea what the Phillies end game is here? To get younger? Why not trade Utley so he can DH?
It seems that were in purgatory - not rebuilding but horrible. Hope this works out.
Lets go FLYERS! - Daman
Ever since the World Series win, the O has been on a decline.
The best pitching in the world is still not enough, not when you're losing playoff elimination games 1-0 with Halladay on the mound.
The pitchers can only carry a team so far. The Phillies just don't have the players to manufacture runs anymore, and the lineup is not set up to do that anyway.
Anyone can sign big players to big contracts, but to make the little deals that help the team is harder. Gillick was decent at that, but Rube is clueless.
If these kinds of seasons continue, and the reputation the Phils built the last 5 or 6 years is washed away, it will definitely be an interesting time to be a Phillies fan.
Not a fan of the Rube. |

This offseason has been really slow. If you take out the offer sheet to Weber this UFA period has been boring. |

Giving Rollins $11M per year was a mistake. Made no sense to make that move. |

Yeah it has, but I'd rather have Homer be quiet with the team he has now. Keep the same basic group of guys. They're gonna be unbelievable, methinks. |

Man that's awesome, seems like all those guys get along. Funny how people say Kessel is one of the most disliked but it seems like everyone there was getting along well and having fun. It really suprised me to see Kessel shoot 104.12mph wow. |

The mantra "pitching wins championships" comes with the relatively unknown corollary, which is, "Pitching wins championships when the team's offense can outslug a AA team". That's the problem with the Phils. If they had even a MEDIOCRE offense, they would have won the World Series last year. But alas, their offense is comparable to a hockey team's offense when killing a penalty.
I hate Ruben too. He manages this team like a video game. Trade everyone for that sexy option, and go out and dump 9 figures on that sexy free agent. That doesn't work in real life, my friends, as we have seen. He's backed himself into the dreaded corner of an old team with nobody to take the reigns. Now he needs to correct it, and we all know how that's going to work. Tampa Bay Rays, anybody? No? Ok then...how bout the Washington Nationals? Get it?
You know what I hate more than Ruben though? The people that say he made this team a contender. No, ladies and gentlemen, that was Pat Gillick. He brought in this championship core. Ruben just inherited it, and destroyed it using addition by subtraction.
This team has been taking a nosedive since 2008, with the fans and organization either condoning it, or being to ignorant to accept it.
Welcome to multiple 85-90+ loss seasons. Welcome to reality. |

Likewise with JVR. I feel this was a positional switch and not about giving up on either player from either Franchise. Had we more Defensemen and Toronto more Forwards I think both sides would be very happy keeping them. |

I think all three are horrible contracts. Rollins is done. Not worth that kind of money. The Phillies gave in b/c of what was available (plus they have nothing in their system). |
|
|
|
Obviously. But right now, they have to add 3 outfielders and a 3rd baseman to put a good team on the field. All the while already having 135M committed to 10 players heading into next year. Unless your counting on Dom Brown. - MJL
Schierholtz isn't a world beater, but he is an average ML outfielder that fields his position well. Lifetime OBP around .320. |

People need to understand that this team is officially in rebuild mode. There is no "fielding a good team" for next year, because they're not playing for next year. They're playing for 2017. |

relative to other ss in all-around performance, rollins is well worth the deal. he's a terrific fielder and baserunner and is still a top-5 hitting SS in the NL this year, which should tell you how thin the position is offensively. |

Agreed. The only move that I think would be very good that is still left is if Visnovsky get's his trade revoked and Anaheim still wants to move him for picks. He'd be a great temp solution for a Puck moving D-man. He got moved for a couple of non-1st picks too. If he's willing to move of course. |

He's injury prone (been okay this year) and his numbers are on the decline every single year. Pass. They should of went with Galvis from the beginning and used that money elsewhere for this club. |

I don't think they will need that much time to get back to being a contender. They need to free up as much money as possible so they can spend it WISELY on players to fill the holes.

i suppose we'll have to agree to disagree, but the rollins deal is really the least of their issues, imo. galvis is an absolutely dreadful hitter (and that was while on PEDs). |
