People put down what they can't understand. WAR is over his head so to him it's meaningless. - jstross
That's another false assumption on your part. |

Sure, it's theoretical in nature, but all of these advanced stats are embraced by a growing number of teams (and maybe a majority at this point) Also, the calculation is slightly different on fangraphs and baseball-reference, but it's not like the differences are vast in their findings. How can you say a number that is calculated based on years of research of offensive, defensive and baserunning statistics, park factors, and era is "useless"?
And the "people who can't look at a game and judge a player" comment is completely ridiculous and superficial.
Did you ever think for a second that your eyes might lie to you? - OrangeBlack27
There are plenty of metrics that can be used to measure a player that are standardized and aren't theoretical. And can be measured definitively. If your judging a player based on WAR, your not looking in the right places. |

That's not the only thing I judge by and my previous posts have should tell you that. But it's also ridiculously pompous to say that I'm "not looking in the right places" when you are trying to make your point with RBIs, which is a very limited view of a player's value. (see here: http://www.fangraphs.com/...an-howard-rbi-overvalued/)
I didn't want to touch WAR because I had a feeling you'd discredit it. I can make my point by pointing to all the metrics that determine a player's WAR, which I tried to do discussing Mayberry and Schierholtz's splits and defensive play. |

It may be obvious to you, but you have zero basis to make that statement. And I'll stick to the subject matter, and stay away from the personal stuff. Because I have no need to go there. - MJL
Dude, you've been going there the whole time. You've been insulting people left and right with your condascending holier than though attitude and you know it. |

(he actually wrote that in a column last year like he was clever) - OrangeBlack27
i actually side with you on this, in spite of the fact that i refuse to try to understand war or anything beyond Home Runs |

I think you obviously mistook my comments or that I didn't relay them clearly. I was not saying in any way that that is the only way you personally look at things. It was a general statement relating to anyone.
But by the same token you are mistaken in saying that I'm just making my point with RBI's. |
